Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan was named Sports Personality of the Year at the 3rd edition of the Ghana Sports Fans awards held on Saturday.
The Shanghai SIPG ace beat fellow Black Stars teammate Andre Ayew and coach Avram Grant to the top award of the night.
Gyan secured most of votes from Ghanaian sports fans to win the award mainly due to his immense charity in the year under review.
The former Sunderland ensured one his less productive campaigns on the field of play with injury taking its toll on both his club and national team form.

But charitable deeds such as the donation of $10,000 to the Cardio Center of the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, the refurbishments of a Children’s ward of a hospital in Kumasi, the staging two boxing bouts, a double donation to the Black Queens worth $40,000 were however deemed so vital as the voting pattern proved for Gyan to be handed the award.
He described the accolade as a fulfillment of his boyhood dream.
“I am leaving in my dream now,” he said after being handed the award.
“Ever since I was little, and people asked what I wanted to be in future with my friends, people will say lawyers, doctors and stuff like that but I always said I wanted to be a football star.
“And anytime my friends see me now, they say, yes, I have achieved my dream.”
