Provide Referees With Effective Security At League Centres

Assistant FIFA referee David Agyin has called on the organisers of the Ghana premier league (GPL), Premier League Board (PLB) and the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG)  to provide adequate security for Ghanaian referees at  the various league centres when the league starts.

Ghanaian referees in the 2013/14 premier league season considered boycotting all matches stating assault on members of the association by fans who deemed a decision had gone against them. The recent development of referees being assaulted at match centres irked the membership of RAG who felt aggrieved after a 21-year-old referee died officiating a division one league between Unity FC and Techiman  City.

Referee Agyin who recently received his badge as FIFA assistant referee and also serves as a member of RAG is leading a plea call for proper security measures to protect referees as the 2015/16 season draws nigh.

“Our problem is the provision of adequate security or effective and efficient security as referees. At our league centres security is always undermined and that contradicts the laws and requirement of the game.”

He added, “officiating in the local league officiating is always difficult than the international duties as we as referees are faced with security challenges but as knights-of-the-whistle we take it to the chin and put up our best performance”
