Shanghai SIPG’s impressive debut Champions League campaign continued with a 3-1 victory over Melbourne Victory that ensures they will finish top of Group G.
Melbourne Victory’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the Asian Champions League took a hit after Asamoah Gyan’s made into in the next round.
Even though Gyan didn’t make it into the starting line up ,two goals in two minutes did the damage for the hosts with Yu Hai and Elkeson netting just prior to the break to put the Chinese outfit in control.
Dario Conca sealed the result midway through the second half from the penalty spot to confirm Shanghai as Group G winners with a game to spare.
Jesse Makarounas pulled one back for Victory with less than 10 minutes but it proved to be little more than consolation for the visitors.
Suwon Bluewings leapfrogged Victory into second spot in the pool with a 2-1 win at Gamba Osaka.
Melbourne Victory play host to Gamba Osaka in their final Group G match on May 3 whilst Shanghai SIPG’s will play Suwon Bluewings in a match that will not stop the Chinese from being top of the group G.
