May 9th Survivor Reveals Reason For Boycotting 15th Anniversary Commemoration

The 15th Anniversary commemoration if the May 9th Stadium Disaster was held Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Conspicuously missing at the Ceremony was popular Hearts of Oak supporter and leader of the powerful chapter ‘O’, Aziz Haruna Futah, who is one of the many survivors of the unfortunate incidence in 2001.

Futah has been a staunch critic of the way Ghanaian authorities have catered for the children of the fans who perished during the disaster.

Although authorities remain adamant that they are doing their best with the setting up of a Board of Trustees that are seeing to the educational needs of the children of the departed souls, the former Hearts of Oak management member think their effort is woefully inadequate and hence his decision to boycott Monday’s commemoration event.

Speaking to the BBC from Accra, Aziz Futah revealed that there are still numerous children whose parents died in May 9th disaster but their educational needs are not taken care of by the Board of Trustees.

The Chapter ‘O’ also noted that, the Board of Trustees of the the May 9th disaster are either doing anything to support the bereaved children or are being selective in the discharge of their duties.

The May 9th Stadium Disaster saw more than 125 football fans lost their lives when Hearts of Oak player Asante Kotoko in 2001.

The disaster is the biggest sports related disaster in Africa.
