FA Cup Report: Kotoko Edge Out Storm Academy

Asante Kotoko’s dream of place in Cape Coast to enjoy the green turf of the newly commissioned edifice in the MTN FA Cup, took another giant step as they bundled out Storm Academy in the round of 16 of the competition.

After a 1-1 draw in regulations time, the Porcupine Warriors were more accurate from 12-yards as Michael Osei’s arsenal’s dispatched the lower tier side 5-3.

The race for the final eight teams was keenly contested. After a blistering start in the game by Kotoko, they were pinned by Storm Academy, and the back line failed to communicate well, and Twumasi Frimpong took advantage and broke the virginity of the game after 18 minutes.

Kotoko flew out of their blocks in search of the equaliser, but Coach Awal’s boys were too resolute and composed, curtailing all the efforts of last year’s finalist.

They held onto the dressing room with their noses in front, and a quarter final ticket was beckoning.

However, the quality of Kotoko was on display, and they levelled up courtesy of Bennet Ofori. The Dormaa Messi as he is affectionately called, thumped in the equaliser after beating all men in the box to Samuel Sekyere’s needle point cross 14 minutes into the second half.

Neither side could find the back of the net again in the remaining minutes of the game, and it had to be decided on penalties.

After a hundred percent success in the first four kicks, Seth Twum and Isaac Mensah failed to score, and Samuel Sekyere and Eric Donkor capitalised to win the day for Kotoko.
