Some 15 years ago today, the day was met with great shock as people of Ghana where left in total disbelieve and dilemma as to event unfolding at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The May 9 disaster is still the worst stadium disaster to have taken place in Africa which took the lives of some innocent 127 football fans who just had a passion towards the game of football.
As this year marks the 15th anniversary of that tragic event, a commemoration of various activities will take place including a ceremony at the May 9th statue in Accra and i will like to rethink the aftermath of this tragic event.
Ghana are no minors in football especially after winning the African Cup of Nations four times and having produced numerous finest players on the African continent.
But the big question is, have we learned from our mistakes as one of the huge giants of the game in Africa. What role have all the major stakeholders in the game played into making fans understand the rules of game. Its impending responsibility unto all the stakeholders involved in the game to ensure concise decorum at our football stadium with the media playing a very crucial role in this education process.
As we all know football has three mutually exclusive results, is either you win, draw and loss. So its an impending duty of all the major stakeholders in the football fraternity to educate football fans for the growth of a sports which has recently being on a downward surge.
Recent happenings in the Ghana Premier League 2015/2016 demonstrates how some football fans have been irresponsible in their conduct, where by all kinds of hooliganism slogan are chanted to render protest to decisions by football officials.
How secured is a spectator going to enjoy himself/herself,what level of football quality is a spectator going to witness, it is worth paying huge monies as gate fees to go and watch a football match, these questions remained unanswered as the growth game is being hindered.
May the souls of all the 127 football fans rest in peace.
