Yaya Toure admits he thought it was Manchester United who wanted to sign him from Barcelona – and his agent had to tell him it was the team that play in blue who actually approached him.
The midfielder signed for Manchester City for £24million in 2010 and insists he has no regrets, despite initially thinking he could be heading for Old Trafford instead.
‘To be in this squad that is making history, it’s unbelievable,’ Toure said. ‘When I was at Barcelona and initially approached by Manchester City I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me.
‘My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts. ‘At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot.
‘It was a big challenge but I came because I knew they were going to succeed and we would win trophies, compete with the big clubs and with Manchester United.
Toure travelled with the City squad ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday night against Real Madrid, despite recently struggling with injury.
