Djokovic Wins French Open Title

Novak Djokovic secured his maiden French Open title by beating Andy Murray in four sets at Roland Garros.

 

The Serb won Sunday’s final 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam crowns simultaneously.

 

Djokovic’s Paris triumph leaves him with 12 major titles, just five short of Roger Federer’s record of 17.

 

Second seed Murray, Britain’s first male French Open finalist since 1937, showed maginificent form in winning the first set but was unable to convert a break point at the beginning of the second.

 

Djokovic, the top seed, went on to claim the second set and comprehensively secure victory, as the Scot appeared to tire, both mentally and physically.

 

“It’s a very special moment, the biggest of my career,” said Djokovic, who lost his previous three finals at the tournament.

 

“I felt today something that I never felt before at Roland Garros – I felt the love of the crowd.”

 

With three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten in attendance, Djokovic imitated the Brazilian by carving a large heart shape in the Court Philippe Chatrier clay, before falling into it.

 

“I drew the heart on the court, like Guga, who gave me permission to do (so),” said the world number one. “My heart will always be with you on this court.”

 

Murray was graceful, albeit naturally disappointed, in defeat.

 

“This is Novak’s day,” said the Scot.

 

“Winning all four of the Grand Slams is an amazing achievement. This is something that is so rare in tennis, and it will take a long time for it to happen again.

 

“Everyone here who came to watch is obviously extremely lucky to see it.

 

“Personally, being on the opposite side, it sucks to lose the match.”
