Former England International, Emile William Ivanhoe Heskey has lamented the woes of the England national team in comparison with that of Ghana as having failed to meet their expectations in major tournaments, despite the talented players they both have. Ghana for the past 34 years has not won any honours with regards to Africa’s biggest continental showpiece despite coming closer on numerous occasions whilst England on the other hand after their World Cup triumph in 1966 have failed to win any honours despite growth of the English game.
The former Liverpool legend said: “I think with the African countries you have very strong teams, you probably have the same problem like England has where qualification isn’t a problem but performance at the actual tournament is the problem, and you can’t tell whether it’s nerves of what.”
“We cant stay there are bad players but we haven’t seen the best of the England and African teams, apart from the African Cup of Nations we have seen the best of Ghanaian players in a World Cup”.
The 38 year old striker who won 62 caps for England also emphasized on how hopeful he is that Ghana will reclaim it prowess as one of the continental heavyweights especially with upcoming 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Unsurprisingly the Three Lions’ had a poor start to the Euro 2016 campaign in France after a 1-1 draw with Russia in their group opener despite the boastfulness of the most prolific squad at this year’s championship.
