Nemanja Matic is keen on linking up with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford after Manchester United made initial inquiries to Chelsea over a potential deal for the midfielder, according to the Daily Mail.
Mourinho was confirmed as the new United manager last month and is expected to be extremely busy in the transfer market this summer rebuilding the squad he’s inherited from sacked Dutchman Louis van Gaal.
A new central midfielder is likely to be a priority as Michael Carrick is out of contract while Bastian Schweinsteiger’s future is in doubt after a disappointing injury-plagued debut season in England following his move from Bayern Munich last summer.
It looks like Mourinho is looking to raid his former club as the Daily Mail claim that United have now made contact with Chelsea to open talks over a potential deal for Nemanja Matic.
The Serbian international was the first player Mourinho signed when he took over during his second spell at Stamford Bridge in 2014 after bringing the midfielder back to West London from Benfica.
Matic played a vital role in securing the title in 2015 as he forged a reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League but the 27-year-old endured a difficult second season after falling out-of-favour under Guus Hiddink at the turn of the year.
It remains to be seen whether Matic is part of Antonio Conte’s first team plans following his appointment as the new Chelsea manager but the Daily Mail claim that the Serbian midfielder would be keen to link-up with Mourinho at United as he wants a fresh start to rejuvenate his career.
