WADA Warns Russia of Olympic Exile

Russia has been warned it may face Olympic exile if the allegations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi are proven.

An investigation funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency into allegations made by the former director of Moscow’s anti-doping lab Grigory Rodchenkov is currently being led by Canadian legal expert Richard McLaren.

His report will be completed by July 15, two weeks before the start of the Rio Games, but McLaren has already revealed he has been able to corroborate some of Rodchenkov’s claims.

Speaking at a conference in London, WADA president Sir Craig Reedie said: “In the coming weeks we’ll learn the results of the McLaren investigation and it may present a precedent-setting opportunity to demonstrate our collective commitment to clean sport.”

Describing what might come from the inquiry as “another high-profile moment”, Reedie added: “If the allegations are true, we will respond thoroughly and effectively.”

A global ban on Russia’s athletics federation that has been in place since November was upheld by world athletics’ governing body the IAAF in a unanimous vote on Friday.

This followed a huge public relations effort by the Russian authorities to overturn the ban, which was imposed following an 11-month investigation led by WADA’s first president Dick Pound.
