All African University Games: Ghana Secured Second Place

Ghana finished in second place behind South Africa in the overall rankings at the end of the 8th Africa University Games which ended at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa on Saturday, 2nd July, 2016.


Ghana’s three representatives at the Games- the University of Ghana Legon(UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Education Winneba- collectively won 29 medals made up of 12 gold,  10 silver and 7 bronze.


The trio’s performance at the Games was only bettered by host country South Africa whose collective medal haul was made up of 24 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze.


Out of 33 participating African Universities, the University of Education Winneba was the highest ranked Ghanaian University, capturing 5th place after winning 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.


With 4 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, the University of Ghana Legon finished 7th while the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology came 9th with 2 gold medals and a silver medal.


The Tshwane University of Technology won the overall competition with 8 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, followed by the University of Johannesburg in second place with 7 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 8 bronze medals while Ndejie University from Zimbabwe settled for third place with 7 gold medals, 3 silver medals and a bronze medal.
