Solomon Asante Switches Attention To CAF Confederation Cup

DR Congo based Ghanaian forward Solomon Asante has switched his attention to the CAF Confederation Cup after falling short at the last hurdle in their title defense.

Solomon Asante and his Ghanaian contingents won the 2015 CAF Champions League with TP Mazembe but crushed out of this year’s edition to WAC of Morocco in the final qualification to the group phase.

The former Berekum Chelsea slippery forward however switched attention to the Confederation Cup as a consolation trophy for their failed attempt at defending their crown.

Asante played an integral role for TP Mazembe en route to their continental crown but has so far failed to replicate the kind of performances that earned him royal treatment across the continent.

The disappointed attacking prodigy pledged to lead a crusade in the Confederation Cup to atone for their dreadful title defense.

“We couldn’t defend the CAF Champions League we won last year but we are bent on winning the Confederation Cup to atone for our failed title defense. Collectively we know what it means to win trophies and the Confederation Cup is our next target for now”, Solomon Asante told www.sportscrusader.com.

Asante watched from the bench as TP Mazembe booked their place in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup with a 2-2 aggregate win over Stade Gabesiene of Tunisia.

Compatriots Daniel Nii Agyei and Yaw Frimpong featured for the struggling Congolese in the return leg as they confirmed their place in the money zone of the Confederation Cup on Tuesday.

Okwawu United – Sekondi Hasaacas MTN FA Cup Game To Go Ahead

GN Bank Division One outfit, Okwawu United will hope to cause a minor upset when they host Sekondi Hasaacas of the Ghana Premiership in their round of 16 tie of the MTN FA Cup competition on Sunday.

The game will be played at the Nkawkaw Park, and, it is set to go ahead after earlier moves by the hosts to pull out of the competition.

At home, United will be favourites to win this one as they have been very strong at the Nkawkaw Park this season in the Division One League (DOL), winning all but one of their matches.

Hasaacas have been very poor travelers in the Ghanaian game for quite some time now, it will find it difficult to produce a result against the DOL high-flyers.

United are chancing a place in the top-flight league next season, and, will be high on confidence as they head into this battle.

Hasaacas have lost all their away games in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) this season, and, it will be interesting to see where they will draw inspiration from as they visit traditionally one of the most difficult venues in Ghana football.

Chieftains at the club believes the MTN FA Cup represents the best opportunity for them to win silverware this season, and, are not relenting in their efforts towards achieving success in the competition this season.

Head of their technical team, Manuel Zacarias has not lost a game since being appointed a couple of weeks ago, and, said they will approach their next game with all seriousness.

“We understand RTU is a step below us in the Ghana football league structure, but, this is an FA Cup game, and, if we want to progress, then we must take it head on,” he said.

The fact that RTU will be at home for this tie the Portuguese added, will, inspire them to go for it, knowing they will be in the last eight if they win.

However, he contends that they will hope to press home their top-flight status to progress to the next round of the competition at the expense of the GN Bank Division One outfit.

Bechem United will be at home to Kumasi Asante Kotoko when the Ghana Premier League resumes next Wednesday.

Mighty Royals Hope To Cause MTN FA Cup Upset At Wa

Wamanafo Mighty Royals will hope to cause a huge upset in the round of 16 ties of the MTN FA Cup competition when they visit the home of Wa All Stars on Sunday.

Royals are flying high in the GN Bank Division One League in Zone One as they chase a spot in the top-flight next season, and, have been impressive in the knockout competition so far.

It will be a huge upset if they are able to beat All Stars at the Wa Stadium on Sunday as the home side has been very dominant at that venue over the last few seasons.

And playing against the premiership side, Royals will have to punch above their weight to be in contention of knocking out their more illustrious opponents from the competition.

All Stars have targeted winning silverware this season, in either the League or Cup competition and will mount a massive assault on this game with a place in the last eight assured for the winner.

It should therefore be a good game to savour for fans in the Upper West region with the possibility of a shock not been ruled out entirely.

PSG Win French League Cup For Third Year In A Row

Angel di Maria scored the decisive goal as 10-man Paris St-Germain beat Lille to win France’s Coupe de la Ligue for the third year running.

Javier Pastore’s volley gave Laurent Blanc’s side a half-time lead, as Lille appealed for offside.

Djibril Sidibe equalised with a free-kick, before PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot was sent off.

Di Maria rolled in the winner as keeper Vincent Enyeama inexplicably charged 30 yards from goal to meet the winger.

Victory means that PSG remain on course for a clean sweep of domestic trophies, having won the Trophees des Champions and Ligue 1, and with the Coupe de France final against Marseille to come on 21 May.

Manager Blanc’s future, though, remains uncertain because of his failure to take the club beyond the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League, where they were defeated by Manchester City.

Di Maria shot weakly at Enyeama in the opening seconds of an entertaining final at the Stade de France, with Lille looking the more dangerous side after surviving a difficult opening 10 minutes.

Frederic Antonetti’s team had won six successive games going into the final, but went behind to a controversial goal five minutes before before half-time.

Pastore lashed a shot at goal as Lille struggled to clear a corner, with PSG full-back Layvin Kurzawa standing in an offside position inside the six-yard box as the ball flew into the net.

The officials ruled that Kurzawa was not active because he did not move towards the ball, but Enyeama believed that he was effectively prevented from diving to save the shot because the PSG man was in the way.

Lille responded positively, though, with Sidibe directing a free-kick into the corner of the net four minutes into the second half after Adrien Rabiot had been booked for fouling Sofiane Boufal.

Rabiot picked up a second booking, and was dismissed, for a late challenge on Boufal with 20 minutes left.

Lille, though, gave away a soft goal four minutes later, as Adama Soumaoro’s weak back header allowed Di Maria to sprint on to goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu’s clearance, and the Argentian international nicked the ball past the onrushing Enyeama.

Soumaoro headed wide with a good chance to bring Lille level again, but PSG held on.

Video Referees "To Be Used At 2018 World Cup"

FIFA president Gianni Infantino hopes the 2018 World Cup in Russia will be the first tournament where video referees help officials with “game-changing” decisions.

In March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) said it would test technology over a two-year period to help with goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties.

That was set to start no later than the 2017-18 season but Infantino said testing would “start now and will take two years”.

The Swiss, who succeeded Sepp Blatter as boss of world football’s governing body in February, added: “This means that by March 2018 we will see if it works or not.

“I really hope that the World Cup in Russia will be the first World Cup where video refereeing is used to make refereeing maybe better.”

In the experiments, a video assistant referee will have access to video replays during matches and will either review an incident on request or communicate with the referee proactively about an incident that may have been missed by the officials on the field of play.

On a visit to Moscow, Infantino also said he had received assurances from the Russian government that the economic crisis engulfing the country would not affect preparations for the 2018 tournament.

Hawk-Eye to be used at Euro 2016

Meanwhile, UEFA has selected British company Hawk-Eye as the goal-line technology supplier for all matches at Euro 2016.

The camera-based system that is used in the Premier League was chosen ahead of Germany-based Goal Control, which was in operation at the 2014 World Cup.

European football’s governing body UEFA decided to introduce the technology in January after incidents where goals had not been given despite crossing the line.

Co-hosts Ukraine were denied such a goal against England at Euro 2012.

In contrast to the Premier League, Uefa has previously opted to use additional assistant referees in its competitions, including the Champions League, and will continue to use five officials at Euro 2016 in France.

“Goal-line technology and additional assistant referees complement each other perfectly,” UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina said.

Hawk-Eye, which uses seven cameras per goal, was chosen after a selection process in which all four FIFA-licensed goal-line technology providers were invited to provide information and submit commercial offers.

It was the first company to receive a FIFA goal-line technology license and, in addition to the Premier League, it is already used in the Bundesliga and Serie A as well as in the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Foovi Aguidi Targets FA Cup Glory With Hearts

Striker Foovi Aguidi has said he is targeting FA Cup success with Accra Hearts of Oak this season and believes that the next game in this year’s competition against Samartex on Saturday is a must win one.

The Phobians are winless in their last two games both in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and turn their attention to the knockout competition this weekend.

Hearts go into this game as favourites in this MTN FA Cup round of 32 game and, Foovi agrees that the team must get back to winning ways as soon as possible to bring their confidence levels back on track.

Hearts have lost one and drawn the other of their last two games and beating Samartex on Saturday is what Foovi says is high on the players agenda as they seek a first trophy in this competition since 2000.

“We have no choice than to win this game for our fans on Saturday and nothing should stop us from going for the win that will take us to the next stage of the competition,” he said.

The players he added are focused on this agenda and will go all out for the win that will take them through to the last 16 of the competition.

“Victory for us is a must on Saturday, and we will go for it,” he said, adding that the home team will come at them in confident mood as they will be at home, but trusts that Hearts of Oak will rise to the challenge.

Sabahn Laryea Back For Hearts’ MTN FA Cup Game

Accra Hearts of Oak midfielder Sabahn Laryea is available for selection for his side’s MTN FA Cup round of 32 game with Samartex FC on Saturday.

The player has duly served the one match suspension imposed on him after he picked a third yellow card of the season prior to their last game.

Laryea picked up a third yellow card of the season in the 1-3 loss to Wa All Stars in Accra, and, therefore missed Hearts’ Ghana Premier League game with Techiman City at the weekend.

His position in the starting line-up was taken by Leonard Tawiah as the Phobians drew goalless with the league debutants in that away encounter.

Laryea expressed satisfaction about the team’s performance in last Sunday’s game, and thanked his colleagues for being up to the task as they came out unscathed in that difficult encounter.

“I will like to thank my teammates for leaving up to the task in last Sunday’s game in Techiman, as we kept our unbeaten away run intact in that goalless draw game,” he said.

He was swift to point out that the side will look to take the games as they come and believes that Accra Hearts of Oak will rise to the task on Saturday as they engage Division One side, Samartex FC in the FA Cup competition.

Laryea will look to play a part in that game as Hearts seek to book a place in the next round of the competition by overcoming the lower tier side in their own backyard of Samreboi in Ghana’s Western region.

Rampant Mighty Warriors lift 2016 Keta Cup

Keta based side Havedzi Mighty Warriors defeated Kogi Confluence from Nigeria 2-0 in a exhilarating encounter at the Aborigines Beach Soccer Arena to win the 2nd edition of the Keta Cup.

The tournament featured the likes of Kogi Confluence (Nigeria),  Team Bricks (Togo) as well as last year’s champions Owibeseb Beach Soccer Club (Nigeria) as part of the Easter celebrations.

Mighty Warriors capitalized on the home support to edge their spirited Nigerians in a thrilling 2-0 win in the final of the tournament’s second edition.

Most Valuable Player of the tournament and Havedzi winger, Alfred Torsu reveled in the dominant performance from his team mates ahead of the resumption of the domestic beach soccer league where they are billed to take on stern rivals Sunset.

“It is going to psyche us up psychologically because we were able to beat them over here and last season when we met them we beat them so we know their weaknesses and if we meet them again we can overcome them again” he told sportscrusader.com.

Experience trainer for the Nigeria National Beach soccer team and head coach of the Kogi Confluence, Ejo Aludo, tagged the triumph over his side as a result of the continual presence of beach soccer league.

Also addressing the media, Nigeria Beach  Soccer National Team and Kogi Confluence coach Awudu Ejo  Adamu said the fact that Ghana has an active Beach soccer league has improved their game.

“Really the game is good because Ghana play a league and Nigeria doesn’t,” he said.

“My team Kogi Confluence is situated in the North of Nigeria and we don’t have a beach, we have to travel seven hours to Badagry to come train and that was three days before this competition which isn’t enough,” he added.

He however says he had his reservations about officiating during the tournament and suggests tournament organisers  update officials on the latest FIFA rules.

“There are some new rules and maybe these rules are not yet available to some officials.

May be FIFA has sent it but the referee could have  collected it from the GFA”, the Nigerian said.

The Ghana Beach Soccer league resumes next week after the Easter break.
