Cobblah Decry Players Inexperience

Jimmy Cobblah has decried Inter Allies’ lack of experience when it matters most for the team to grind results.

The Eleven Is To One suffered their seventh defeat of the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League (GPL) when they met Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park on Wednesday.

Two goal from Saddick Adams (penalty) and Tei Nii Horsu were enough to leave Jimmy Cobblah with headache after the game.

“In the first half we were on top of our game, but in the second half they came in strongly and our problem was our goalkeeper,” the former Wa All Stars coach said in his post match press conference.

He explained that: “This (Salifu Saed) is a new goalkeeper who has never tasted a premier league match before. He just from a second division side and it was obvious that he was lacking experience.

“I think inexperience let us down because we played very well but we are having many of our players on our injury list so I think despite losing, I am very proud of the players because some are new players and some of them have not played all season.”

“So I think they really did well but the way forward for us is to take every match seriously.” he stated.

Feature: Who Dares An Untouchable Wa All Stars?

The 2015/16 Ghana Premier League leaders, Wa All Stars, have made their best start to a league season since they gained promotion to the elite division of Ghana Football three years ago.

Their performance cum results have not wowed many a GPL fan, due to alleged preferential officiating in their favour. Decisions which have gone against them have seen the Referees Review Panel (RRP), a body instituted to oversee the performance of match-day officials, punish the officials in question for decisions they claim were ‘malicious’.

The situation appears to be even more grim, considering also that, officiating in their matches, especially away from home – and notably against Ghana’s two biggest sides ( Hearts of Oak during the first round of the league and Kumasi Asante Kotoko during their match week 17 encounter), has been earning popular attention than their actual display.

Hearts vs Wa All Stars
Hearts vs Wa All Stars

The latest incident is their match week 17 clash against the Porcupine Warriors, who they (Wa All Stars) defeated in their first meeting of the on-going 2015/16 season.

In the 20th minute of the Hearts match, supporters of the Phobia boys threw water bottles and other objects onto the field of play, as well as, at the assistant referee 2 for allowing what they perceived as an offside goal (video evidence, however, later justified the assistant referee’s decision) causing Hearts fans, to, at half time, hurl objects at the match officials, while they made their way to the dressing room.

In the second half, anytime a decision went against Hearts Of Oak, their supporters threw water bottles and other objects at the two assistant referees and onto the pitch.

Reports reaching Sportscrusader.com mentioned there was near-mayhem at the Kumasi Sports Stadium, had it not been for the timely intervention of Ghana Black Stars and former Kotoko midfielder, Agyeman Badu, Opoku Nti and Edmund Ackah who stepped up to stop fans from venting their spleen on referee Dally Gagba who they accused of bias officiating in Kotoko’s league match with Wa All Stars.

Kotoko vs Wa All Stars
Kotoko vs Wa All Stars

Though Kotoko won by a solitary goal, it took the intervention of the 3 gentlemen who actually climbed to the Upper Terrace of the VIP to prevent the fans from throwing objects at the referee and his assistants while they were leaving the pitch after the game. The fans were infuriated by the 2nd half performance of the referee so much so that, that the Communications Manager of the club, Kwaku Ahenkorah, had to take the public address system to plead with them not to do anything that could land the club into trouble.

Critics opine that, the “integrity of referees are questioned” when some of their decisions go against Wa All Stars” and that, “they are influenced”.

Others are of the opinion that the RRP’s decision to suspend Referee Alexander Nsiah and Assistant referee Shine Ayitey for awarding a ‘dubious penalty’ in favour of Bechem United in their match-day 8 game against Wa All Stars, implied that, the referees are not supposed to make mistakes, that they are super human and also, that, even if they make mistakes, they are not honest ones.”

With these incidents, especially the ones against Wa All Stars’ closest competitors in the title race(Hearts and Kotoko) in hindsight, would one be far from right in making the inference that Kwesi Nyantakyi( President of the GFA)’s ownership of the club(Wa All Stars) is remotely influencing referees’ preferential treatment of the Wa-based side?

The ambitious right back played down the first defeat suffered by the league leaders in six matches but called for quick response from his team mates ahead of the Ashgold clash at the Wa Park.

A 68 minute header from captain Amos Frimpong won the game for the Reds at the Baba Yara Sports stadium to end the unbeaten run of Wa All Stars in the division.

We are WA ALL Stars and fear none in the league”, Hafiz Adams said.

Euro 2016: Southgate Rejects England Job

Manager Gareth Southgate has announced that he will not be taking over as England coach, even on an interim basis, according to report in the Telegraph.

It had been widely believed that the England Under-21s coach would be the man to take the job after Roy Hodgson’s resignation earlier this week following the team’s shocking Euro 2016 defeat against Iceland.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn believed that he was the right man for the job, but Southgate has shut him down.

It is understood that the former England defender does not believe this is the right step for him at this stage in his career.

The FA had hoped that the first World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in early September would be led by Southgate on a temporary basis, with the FA then looking to secure a permanent manager.

Even this has been turned down by Southgate.

The report further suggests that the FA will now turn to former manager Glenn Hoddle, who it hopes will hold a temporary position as caretaker while a permanent Hodgson replacement is found.

Slaven Bilic, Laurent Blanc, Arsene Wenger and Eddie Howell have also emerged as potential candidates for the FA.

Volta GJA Beat Akatsi North District In Anniversary Match

As part of their 4th Anniversary celebration as a district, the Akatsi North District hosted the Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) in a football game at the Ave Dakpa Senior High School park.

The GJA team, which comprises of predominantly members from the Volta Regional capital, Ho, got the better of the their host, urging them out 3-2 in a keenly contested encounter.

They journalists scored the first goal of the game just under 15 minutes through Mawunyo Atitse before the Akatsi North District equalized with a long range effort 5 minutes to end the first half.

However, the GJA Volta team scored their second goal 2 minutes into the second half through Davis Attuquaye Clottey, after he received a beautiful return pass from Rustum Gameli Senorgbe, placing the ball at the left corner of the goalkeeper.

The goal motivated the GJA Volta team further to possess the ball in midfield making the Akatsi North District just run around in frustration.

Their superiority paid off with a third goal which was scored by Eric Fiawornu, who left the Akatsi North goalkeeper with no chance.

However, it was Akatsi North District that had the last bite of the cherry with a stunning long range effort that left many of the journalist wondering.

The goal proved  to be nothing more than a consolation with the match finally ending 3-2 in favour of GJA Volta.

Speaking to the media after the fun filled event, the DCE of Akatsi North District, James Gunu thanked the GJA for honoring the invitation and also recommended them for their exceptional performance on the field.

Liberty Coach Bemoans Poor Display

Head Coach of Liberty Professionals, George Lamptey has said that his side did not play well during their 1-1 with Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

Hearts started the game the strongest and their effort in the first half was paid off when inform striker Cosmos Dauda beat his marker to give them the lead on 29 miss.

But the Scientific Soccer Lads recovered their rhythm in the second half, getting the equalizer through striker Bernard Arthur who was later sent off for a second yellow card.

However, the Dansoman based side could not go on to win the ties despite some obvious lapses in the Phobians defense.

And addressing the media after the game, Trainer George Lamptey expressed dissatisfaction about his side’s performance.

According to him, Liberty could have easily repeated what happened in the in the first round had they played a little bit better.

He indicated that Hearts of Oak style of play in the game made it difficult for his players to adopt.

Lamptey further revealed the reason behind his decision to start the with the traditional 4:4:2 formation instead of the usual 4:3:3.

“I decided to go with the 4:4:2 because of officiating in recent times. Referees don’t protect Blessing if he is playing central so I decided to play him on the wings to protect him.

“But once we went down, I had to revert to our normal style and we equalized “, Lamptey concluded.

GPL Report: Frimpong Power Kotoko To Second

Big players arise when they are needed. Leaders step up and take responsibility when it matters most. The Asante Kotoko’s armband is not antonymous to leadership.

Leading Porcupines comes with responsibility and Amos Frimpong has shown his presence when the team needs a leader on the pitch for the second time on the bounce.

Having led a team threatened off the pitch last Sunday to earn a point against a side who made visitors look second fiddle — powering in the equaliser with a thumping header, Amos Frimpong downed league leaders Wa All Stars at the Baba Yara sports stadium on Wednesday to lift the Porcupine Warriors to second — a step above bitter rivals, Hearts of Oak who were held to a one-all draw at the Accra sports stadium by Liberty Professionals.

It was a difficult game for Asante Kotoko as a resolute midfield and defensive play by Wa All Stars nullified their threats. When the Porcupines managed to break through occasionally, they squandered their chances. Bennett Ofori, Obed Owusu and substitute, Duada Mohammed were all culpable, with Bennett Ofori the worst among trio.

Enos Adepah’s men went on the break a number of times but the Kotoko defence, comprising Edwin Tuffour and Ahmed Adams in the middle; Amos Frimpong and Samuel Kyere on the laterals were bullet proofs. Wa All Stars can’t be overlooked for wastefulness too.

Both sides were frustrated for their profligacy, and as Kotoko searched that precious goal to avoid falling behind wider at the tender age of the second round of the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League (GPL), Amos Frimpong led by example and thumped home the first and only goal of the game after 67 minutes — his second goal in two successive games.

Neither side could fined the back of the net again and Kotoko go second on the league log, 1 point less than leaders, Wa All Stars.

Kotoko line-up: Ernest Sowah, Amos Frimpong, Samuel Kyere, Edwin Tuffour, Ahmed Adams, Theophilus Nyame, Sarfo Gyamfi, Stephen Nyarko/Kwadwo Poku, Obed Owusu/Dauda Mohammed, Bennett Ofori, Eric Donkor/Emmanuel Gyamfi.

Bench: Atta Kusi, Ohene Brenya, Emmanuel Osei, Ofori Antwi.

Wimbledon : Federer Survives Second Round Elimination Scare

Roger Federer has ended Marcus Willis’s fairytale Wimbledon run in tennis’s real-life David versus Goliath battle.

The mighty Federer, seven-times champion and 10-times finalist, denied the sentimental favourite and world No.772 in straight sets to join defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Willis, who captured the hearts of Britain with his charge from pre-qualifying to the second round, at least made Federer sweat in the Swiss master’s 6-0 6-3 6-4 win.The lowest-ranked qualifier to win a grand slam match in 28 years settled after a nervy first-set bagel to finally clinch his first game after exactly half an hour.

The crowd’s deafening applause after the breakthrough almost raised the closed roof on centre court.

With his unorthodox style of dunks and slices off both wings, Willis even conjured a break point for an improbably 4-2 lead in the third set before Federer’s class prevailed.

The 17-time major champion reeled off four straight games to secure the match in one hour and 25 minutes.

Willis, who took his season earnings from less than £300 to more than £50,000 for his seven wins over the past fortnight, will return to coaching and league tennis in Coventry on Thursday night.

“I can hold my head high. I’ve had a fantastic few weeks,” the 25-year-old said after revelling in the unforgettable experience.

“If I’m playing well and competing with Roger Federer for a couple of sets, I’m doing the right thing.”

While Willis’s captivating run is over, Federer remains on track for a record eighth crown after advancing to the last 32 for a 14th time.

Next, PSG are also considering making a move for Dutch topscorer Vincent Janssen. According to L’Equipe (via Get French Football), the Ligue 1 giants will battle Tottenham for the services of the 22-year-old.

The Spurs are working on a deal for the Dutch international, who scored 32 goals in all competitions last season for AZ, while Bundesliga club Wolfsburg have also made an approach. However, PSG are considering a bid in the area of £12-13 million.

‘I think I will adapt well. My style of play is more like English than Spanish football. I have a more physical game.’

‘Until recently, I did not know much. My agent told me there was someone from England but I did not know the team.’

‘When I found out, we went over and decided to sign for them.’

Uche is the second Spaniard to sign for Claudio Ranieri’s side this summer following the arrival of defender Luis Hernandez from Sporting Gijon.

The former Black Stars stopper, so it his side into the lead just 10 minutes into the second half with a great finish before forward Eric Gawu scored a second to seal the victory for the Dawu based side.

New Edubiase, before the opening goal had looked solid in defense denying Dreams on a number of occasions.

However, with just 10 minutes into the second half, Edubiase were shocked by Dreams FC with the goal coming from an unlikely source.

Goalkeeper, Philemon McCarthy, in his attempt to clear his lines saw a fairly harmless hit the back of the Edubiase net, becoming the first goalkeeper to score in this season’s league.

Dreams, after taking the lead continued to pile pressure on the visiting team in the dying embers of the week 17 encounter.

The consistent pressure from the newly promoted side paid off when veteran striker, Eric Gawu, coming off the bench, managed to beat his marker to score his second goal of the season to seal the victory for coach CK Akonnor’s m

GPL Match Report: Hearts Fail to Beat 10-man Liberty

Hearts of Oak failed to make their numerical advantage count as they were held by 10-man Liberty Professionals during their week 17 Ghana Premier League (GPL) fixture.

The Phobians playing as the away team at their favourite Accra Sports Stadium home ground started as the brightest of the two sides, creating a pocket of chances n consequently registering the first shot on target through the in-form Cosmos Dauda, who hit a powerful low shot that hit the top right corner of Stephen Kwaku’s goal after he was brilliantly put through by the entertaining attacking midfielder, Razak Patrick.

The Scientific soccer lads immediately responded but Hearts were saved by the cross bar after Sarfo Samuel headed a corner kick straight towards Ebo Mends who saw his goal-bound header bounce off the crossbar.

Liberty Professionals, from then, dominated the game as Hearts were forced to clear their lines with consistent pressure from George Lamptey’s boys.

Caretaker coach of Hearts, Sergio Traguil, who was managing his first official game since his appoitnment, was animated in his technical area throughout the game urging his men forward for the first goal of the game.

Liberty Professionals celebrate their equalizing goal

The instructions paid-off as the man of the moment, Cosmos ‘Neymar’ Dauda, from a counter-attack, was played through by Samudeen Ibrahim and with a sweet first touch, easily skipped past Anthony Nimo and shot with his left foot into the right corner of Stephen Kwaku’s goal to give the Phobians the lead in the 34th minute.

Dauda nearly got his second of the game after picking up a loose ball and just 13-yards from goal, blasted his effort wide off the target as Hearts took a one goal lead into half time.

Hearts fans applauded the team, after referee Awal Mohammed blew his whistle, in acknowledgement of Sergio Traguil’s promise of a Barcelona-esque style of play known as ‘tiki-taka’ on display.

Liberty Professionals, with just five minutes into the second half, got the equaliser from a Latif Blessing assist; a sweet pass from him that found Bernard Arthur in the midst of two Hearts of Oak defenders, who gently tapped into the net to get the home side the equalising goal. The nimble-footed Blessing nearly made it two for Liberty after he skied a lovely cross from Richard Antwi with him unmarked from 12-yards to Samuel Akrugu’s goal.

From then, Liberty appeared to be the hungrier of the two, trying to get the second goal but huffed and puffed to no avail as they had to finish the final 20 minutes of the game with 10-men after Bernard Arthur was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Robin Gnagne.

Bejaia Bag A Point Against Medeama

Algeria’s MO Bejaia managed to come back with a point after playing to a 0-0 draw against Ghana’s SC Medema in their CAF Confederation Cup, Group A match on Wednesday.

The match was held at Sekondi-Takoradi Stadium in Ghana on Wednesday with the visitors aiming for a positive result.

Following the draw, the Crabs now have four points and sit at number two behind leaders TP Mazembe who have six points.

Bejaia came looking for an early goal as they were motivated after beating Young Africans of Tanzania 1-0 in their opening group match.

Despite their hunger and motivation for this tie, they failed to unlock the hosts defence and it was 0-0 at half time.

The second half saw both sides chasing a goal as they showed desperation in an aim to bag the full three points.

However, goals were not easy to find for the the two giants and the match ended in a dull goalless stalemate.

Bejaia will now take aim at their next opponents which is Mazembe in their next match away in Lubumbashi on July 17.

Looking at the hosts, they remain rooted at the third spot with one point. Their next match against Yanga in Tanzania is on July 15.

However, the trip to Dar es-Salaam depends on their President Moses Armah who has threatened to pull out of the tournament before the match due to lack of financial support from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Coach Keni Finally Lands In Japan

Former Accra Hearts of Oak coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi has finally arrived in his native japan after parting ways with Ghana’s Premier Club.

Yatsuhashi arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday after leaving the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Monday.

Coach Keni tweeted by saying; “Safely landed in Tokyo as of last night. I am glad to see my wife who I have not seen while I was coaching in Ghana. I hope everyone is doing well?

The Japanese-American parted ways mutually with the Phobians a couple of week ago after guiding them to finish fourth at the end of the first round of this season’s Ghana Premier League (GPL).

They finished the first round with 26 points from 15 games, just two points behind the leaders a All Stars.

Under Coach Keni’s mandate, Hearts finished the first round of the GPL as the only undefeated side away from home, winning four and drawing four of the eight games they played away from the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra.

It is understood Coach Keni will undertake an upgrading course while he is away, and, he has said he wants to work in Ghana again after he completes his programme.

Liberty Did "No Wrong" Changing Match Venue - PLB

The organisers of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Premier League Board (PLB), have told Sportscrusader.com in an interview that, Liberty Professionals did no wrong changing match venue for their match week 17 encounter against Hearts of Oak.

The Dansoman-based side have divided the football community with their decision to change league venue from their favourite Dansoman Park popularly known as the Carl Reindorf Park to the Accra Sports Stadium.

But Tamimu Issah, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the PLB, has, on behalf of the body, mentioned that Liberty Professionals did no wrong per the regulations of the Ghana Football Association.

“Liberty wrote to us (PLB) ahead of time to ask for permission to use the Accra Sports Stadium for their match week 17 encounter against Hearts of Oak. The reason stated by the management of Liberty was their expectation of more spectators than their home venue can accommodate,” he told Sportscrusader.com.

“We granted their permission because it does not flout any of our regulations – the Accra Sports Stadium is an approved league venue and it is within the jurisdiction of the two clubs (Accra). Should Liberty have requested to play away from Accra, that request won’t have not be granted as it will be to the Away side’s disadvantage and would have compromised sporting integrity,” he added.

Liberty will be looking to do a league double over the Phobians as they won the first encounter by a lone goal after they bossed the entirety of that game.

Berlin FC Banned From Using Ohene Ameyaw Park

The Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association has ordered a TEMPORARY BAN on Berlin FC from using the Nana Ameyaw Park (Techiman) as its home venue with immediate effect.

This decision has become necessary due to the unfortunate incident that occurred during their GN Bank National Division One League (DOL) Match-Day 16 encounter with FC Tanga played on Saturday, 25 June, 2016.

Officials of Berlin FC allegedly prevented the GFA/DOL cameraman from entering the inner perimeter to cover the match and prevented the referees from entering the dressing room during recess till the police intervened.

This decision is in accordance with Article 15(2) of the GFA General Regulations which states that “the GFA may order the closure of any league centre where the safety of clubs, Match Officials or Spectators cannot be guaranteed”.

The Division One League Board will determine the venue for the club’s subsequent home matches in accordance with the provision of Article 15(3) of the GFA General Regulations.

This order is without prejudice to the determination of the case pending before the Disciplinary Committee.

Meanwhile, the Disciplinary Committee has been charged to hear the case in accordance with the GFA Regulations.

CAA Championship: John Ampomah Unhappy With Silver Medal

Ghanaian Javelin Thrower, John Ampomah has expressed dissatisfaction about his performance at the just-ended African Senior Championships in South Africa despite winning a silver medal.

The captain for Team Ghana threw 75.22m in the men’s javelin to pick the silver medal with the gold going to South Africa’s Sunette Viljoen .

And speaking in an interview upon the team’s arrival in Accra, Ampomah revealed that he failed to meet his personal expectation during the 5-day competition.

“I was expecting something, but it was rather unfortunate that I couldn’t meet my expectation”, he said, adding that,  “my expectation was not just to win a medal, but also to throw certain distance that I have been chasing the whole of this year. But I think it’s still not over. As for the medal, I was hoping for, at least, a gold, but it was rather unfortunate”.

Ampomah further revealed that he fell short on some technicalities but was quick to note that, he will be ready for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

“It is just a little technical aspect that I am missing, the strength is there, no injuries, it is just little technical aspect I miss all the time, so, I am going to work on that this coming weeks before Rio and I think I would be good by then”, he stated.

Team Ghana Returned from the 20th African Seniors Championship with six medals and finished sixth on the medal table.

CAF Confed Cup: Medeama Confident Of Victory Over Bejaiah

Head Coach of Medeama SC, Prince Owusu is confident about his team’s chances in Wednesday’s CAF Confederations Cup game against Algerian club MO Bejaia at the Essipong sports stadium.

The Ghanaian side will need to pick up  all three points at stake in order to brighten their chances of progressing to the knock-out stages following their disappointing 3-1 defeat to TP Mazembe in their first group match.

And speaking to the press in the build up to the tie against Bejaia, the Mauves and Yellow Trainer says his players know what is at stake.

“My guys know what time it is right now, we need to go in for the victory”, Owusu noted.

“We learnt TP Mazembe has won their game and that is good for us; that is what we wanted, so we have to do our part well to make sure we win today”, he added.

Medeama are currently bottom of the group B table with no point but a win will revive their hopes of qualifying to the semi final of the competition by moving them above Bejaiah in Second place.

Hearts Trainer Vows To Attend Technical Meetings

Accra Hearts of Oak’s interim coach, Sergio Traguil has vowed to attend the club’s technical review meetings after every match day.

Technical review meetings at the Accra based club became subject of speculation in the media during the stewardship of Kenichi Yatsuhashi, who constantly walked out and sometimes boycott the meeting.

The Japanese trainer had constantly complained about the composition of the technical review panel.

But withTraguil set to take charge of his first Hearts game on Wednesday, the Portuguese tactician has said his attitude will be different from the Japanese trainer because he believes in team work.

“I don’t feel there is anything wrong if I report to the board because I think this will even improve the game because it is teamwork”, Traguil told Starr FM in Accra.

“This will be the opportunity to address some relevant issues to improve so many things”, he added.

Sergio Traguil was in the VIP section of the Accra Sports Stadium when Hearts beat Dreams FC last Sunday.

GPL Update: Dreams FC Going For Fourth Home Win

Sensational Dreams Football Club will be attempting to win their fourth home game of the campaign when they play New Edubiase United in the Match-Day 17 Ghana Premier League (GPL) encounter on Wednesday.

Their home record stands at three wins, four draws and one defeat in their debut season in the Ghanaian top-flight league.

They have scored 10 goals and conceded eight in the GPL so far, and will feel confident of improving that tally in their ninth home game of the season.

Dreams have not won in their last two GPL games, drawing 1-1 with Accra Hearts of Oak at Dawu in the last game of the first round before losing 0-1 to the Phobians in Accra as the second round of the competition began last Sunday.

They will therefore be eager to get back to winning ways at the Dawu base where their record so far this season has been impressive.

New Edubiase United are bottom of the GPL log and, are fighting desperately to avoaid relegation.

They will therefore look tomake things extremly difficult for Dreams FC even in their own backyard as they chase their second away win of the campaign.

In the first round tie played at the Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi, Dreams FC were 1-0 winners and, on home soil, would be the odds on favourites to collect the three points at stake.

Olympic Champion Set To Miss Rio Games

Australian Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson looks set to miss the Rio Games through injury.

Pearson, 29, who won gold at London 2012, has torn her hamstring in training, Australian media reported on Wednesday.

Australia’s track and field captain only returned from injury in June but appears unlikely to make the Olympics, which start on 5 August.

She is due to hold a news conference on Thursday.

The Australian Olympic team’s chef de mission, Kitty Chiller, said “it doesn’t look good” for Pearson.

“It is just such a shame for a fantastic champion, a fantastic fighter and if she doesn’t run in Rio I’ll be very, very sad for Sally and the team,” Chiller added.

Meanwhile, the Australian Olympic team tweeted: “Sad to read injury reports on Sally Pearson. She was fighting to be fit for Rio.”

The 2011 world champion and 2008 Olympic silver medallist missed the end of the 2015 season after shattering her wrist competing in Rome.

The athlete has struggled with track times since her return and finished last at Norway’s Diamond League event earlier this month.

Messi Must Go On, Says Maradona

Lionel Messi has been urged to reconsider his international retirement by Argentina legend Diego Maradona and the country’s president.

The forward, 29, quit after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina were beaten by Chile in the Copa America – a fourth major final loss in nine years.

“Those saying he should quit don’t want us to see what a disaster Argentinean football has become,” Maradona told La Nacion newspaper.

“Messi must go on.”

Maradona, who captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and managed the team at the 2010 World Cup, added: “Messi has to stay because he will reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia in conditions to become world champion.

“The lads have to be supported more to help him take the team forward.”

Messi said after Sunday’s defeat that for him, the national team was “over” and that “it hurts not to be a champion”.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri said he called Messi to tell him “how proud he feels of the national team’s performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism”.

He added he hopes to meet the player next week and convince him to return to the national team.

“The truth is that it’s good fortune, a joy, a gift from God to have the best player in the world in a country like ours that is so football-crazy,” added Macri.

Messi has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with his club, Spanish side Barcelona.

But his only major international honour is Olympic gold at the 2008 Games.

Defeat on Sunday was the second time in two years Argentina have lost the Copa America final to Chile on penalties, while they were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

GPL Preview: Liberty Target League Double Over Hearts

Hearts of Oak will be seek to avenge a defeat later today when they play as guest to Liberty Professionals in the GPL at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Liberty Professionals dominated the entirety of the first round fixture with midfield wizkid, Latif Blessing, being a thorn in the flesh of the Phobia defence as they took all three points, courtesy a slim 1-0 win.

The Dansoman-based side have moved home grounds from the Carl Reindorf Park to Accra Sports Stadium particularly for this game with no information coming from their management as regards the rationale behind the venue change but Sportscrusader.com’s source reveals it is aimed at realising significant financial gains – as they hope Hearts fans will troop-in in their numbers to see their side try to avenge their previous defeat.

Liberty’s last league game ended in an away loss to Cape Coast giants, Ebusua Dwarfs, last Sunday in match week 16 and will hope to revive a promising season by completing a hopeful double over their regional rivals.

Recently recruited players, Derrick Appiah and the returning Kennedy Ashia, could make the match day squad and hope for a league debut against the second placed team on the log.

Hearts started life after former coach, Kenichi Yatsuashi on a high note, with a hard-fought 1-0 home win in match week 16 against league debutants, Dreams FC.

Newly appointed caretaker coach, Sergio Daniel Traguil, is expected to manage the team from the technical area this time around after securing his work permit certificate.

GPL Preview: Kotoko Host Wa Al Stars

It is a battle for supremacy as Asante Kotoko host Wa All Stars at the Baba Yara sports stadium on Wednesday — the second game in three days for both sides in the second round of the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Both sides recorded contrasting results last weekend — Wa All Stars amassed all points at stake against Berekum Chelsea whilst Asante Kotoko could only negotiate for a point against Techiman City.

Wa All Stars v Asante Kotoko

And with the Porcupine Warriors having their sight on the league crown, Michael Osei will assemble his arsenals to ensure they avoid losing all six points to the Wa-based club who dropped them to 5th with a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture before they moved up to third after winning their final game of the first round.

Wa All Stars v Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko were the only team to earn a point away from home in the first game of the second round, and will be buoyed by not only by the result but the performance they displayed against a side who have had a stupendous at home since the opening day of the season — with former Champions Berekum Chelsea and Aduana Stars being culprits.

Asante Kotoko and Wa All Stars have met 17 times in Ghana’s top flight domestic league. The Porcupine Warriors have been superior in this encounter, winning 9 drawing 5 and losing only 3.

At the Baba Yara sports stadium, home grounds, the two sides have met 8 times in the league, with Kotoko achieving 75% success — 6 victories, 1 defeat with the other ending in a stalemate.

Wa All Stars v Asante Kotoko

Recent games between the two sides have ended 3-1 either in favour of Kotoko or All Stars.

In the 2013-14 season, the Porcupine Warriors won this fixture by 3-1, and the Wa-based club avenged the defeat with the same scoreline a season later.

Asante Kotoko again thumped the visitors 3-1 last season, but a bullish Wa All Stars will be confident of their chances.

According to Enus Adepah, Kotoko’s best in this game will be a draw.

Team News

Theophilus Nyame and Evans Quao sustained injuries on Sunday, but the duo were treated and discharged. Evans Quao is ineligible to play in this encounter, and Michael Osei would either start Ohene Brenya or Osei Agyemang in his place.

The latter was impressive until he was sidelined by an injury.

AC Milan Agree Montella Deal

A deal has been agreed between AC Milan and Sampdoria coach Vincenzo Montella, with the Rossoneri ready to pay an annual €2.3 million for his services.

However, although the two parties are content with the deal, Sampdoria have a clause blocking the deal in an attempt to keep their coach and Milan will have to pay to buy-out that particular clause in his contract.

Successful meetings between vice-president Adriano Galliani and Montella’s agent took place on Monday night, with President Silvio Berlusconi happy to close the deal on a two-year contract for Montella.

With just this one last step to be completed, it is believed a fee of €1.1 million, paid to Sampdoria, will be enough to confirm Montella’s appointment at the San Siro.

The 42-year-old was in charge of Catania and Fiorentina before making the move to the Blucerchiati last year, and an official announcement confirming the appointment is expected to be made soon.

He will take over from Cristian Brocchi who oversaw the latter stages of a disappointing Diavolo campaign last year, and who is now ready to step down.

Unai Emery Appointed PSG Manager

French Ligue 1 Champions, Paris Saint German (PSG) have appointed Unai Emery as their new manager after partying ways with Lauren Blanc.

The reigning domestic Champions landed the Spanish trainer with one eye on European glory having won the Ligue 1 consecutively for the past four seasons.

The ‘Parc de Princes’ outfit have failed to stamp their authority on Europe’s elite club competition despite the galaxy of stars and the depth of their riches by their Arab owners.

Laurent Blanc steered the Parisians to a record breaking championship trophy and run of 30 plus in the division without defeat but his UEFA Champions League exit at the quarters eventually cost him his job.

His replacement, Emery, has however dominated European football with three successive UEFA EUROPA league trophies with Spanish side FC Seville.

The 44-year old former Deportivo La Coruna, UD Almeria and Spartak Moskow trainer inked a three year deal with the ambitious French club and look set to hijack the transfer market in search of Ibrahimovics replacement.

Kotoko Ready to Avenge Wa All Stars Defeat

Kotoko’s quest to win this season’s Premier League will receive a major boost on Wednesday should the team win over Wa All Stars in their match day 17 fixture at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Porcupines drew 1-1 away to Techiman City in their last game and they are expected to bag the three maximum points in their midweek clash.

Wa All Stars, who currently lead the league table with 31 points, beat Kotoko 1-0 in the first round. Kotoko now have the chance to avenge that defeat not alone to consolidate their position on the table, but to also make their teeming supporters happy.

For a team that once led the pack and were dislodged only for them to recapture the top spot again, Wa All Stars have the wherewithal to stretch Coach Michael Osei and his team. The Wa based side certainly won’t be mincemeat. Kotoko have actually found them quite a hard nut to crack in most of their encounters although the fabulous lads have eventually emerged victors.

Wednesday’s game isn’t likely to be any different from what have been witnessed overtime. Kotoko must expect a tough challenge. That makes interim head coach, Michael Osei’s task difficult.

His assignment looks difficult not because he and his team can’t win; it’s difficult because they haven’t been convincing especially with the FA Cup loss in Kumasi about two weeks ago still fresh on the minds of some passionate fans.

It’s for Michael Osei and his players to prove beyond doubt, that, they have what it takes to wrestle the league leaders for the three points and as well protect their pride. To that end, the Porcupines have been preparing feverishly for the match. They have been training well with each of the players in camp eager to impress the coach to earn selection.

They are expected to hold their last major training ahead of the game on Tuesday at Adako Jachie and according to Coach Michael Osei that session wouldn’t be too “demanding” since it is to put final touches on their preparation.

The match will kick off at 3pm. The gate fees are as follows: Popular stand – GHȼ5; Centre line – GHȼ8 and VIP – GHȼ20. Kotoko fans should expect a good performance plus a sweet win
