Ace Sports Journalist Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, has advised Ghanaian club owners and administrators to stop offering bribes to match officials in order to win matches.
According to him, such acts kill the game and affects the integrity of the country as well as the football brand in its entirety.
The Ghana league is constantly inundated with stories of bribe being paid to officials in order for matches to be compromised and this does not augur well for the image of Ghana football.
Speaking at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) organized Media and Marketing Seminar on the theme “the causes of low patronage at our stadia”, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, lecturer at the GIMPA Business school, said such negative reportage about bribery in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) goes a long way to push away sponsors and potential ones, and this to a very large extent causes low turn-out at our stadia.
“Football administrators must come to the realization that they are in competition with other leagues across the world and must also brand themselves better if they would be accepted like how the European brand of leagues have been accepted the world over.”
Such negative stories being churned out in the media about the league is what is killing the Ghanaian league, leaving a section of the media to brand it in a negative light.
According to him, people are quick to jump out and say bribery in Ghana football is just a perception but not a reality, and wondered why such negativity is constantly peddled about the league if it is not the case.
The just ended league season saw the bribery claims at its apogee and this act goes to taint the integrity of the game here, the earlier the football family comes together to curtail and arrest these reports, the better it would be for the image of the league in Ghana.
He further noted that player exodus, bad playing field, lack of good reward system and the European League playing time clashing with the time of GPL have also played a key role in drawing away the numbers from the stadium and the GFA as well as all concerned but look at these areas if the league would bounds back to its former glory days.
