Ghana’s pride in this year’s continental football, Medeama SC is on the road to represent the colours of the country in South Africa.
The two-time Ghana MTN FA cup champions run in the CAF Confederation competition, has been a juicy one and they face the final hurdle for a ticket to the group stages of the competition and standing on their way is a tough opposition, as they come against newly crowned South African Champions — Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.
Sundowns secured South Africa’s most prestigious football title for the second time in three years and a PSL record of seven times in total.
While Medeama, 10th on the Ghana Premier League (GPL) log, booked their place in the playoff round of the competition with wins over Al-Ittihad Tripoli and Al-Ahly Shendi.
The Brazilians will officially be crowned this season’s Absa Premiership champions on May 21, when they host Platinum Stars at the Lucas Moripe Stadium after facing their Ghanaian counterparts on May 7.
Off the pitch issues have engulfed Medeama prior to this game, but they would be confident of earning a favourable result to bring the tie to Essipong as they have done in the previous rounds.
Mosimane coach of Sundowns has been closely monitoring the Tarkwa-based side and praised theirk style of play.
“Medeama are a typical Ghanaian team – technical, build up from the back.
“They have a player – number five – a central midfielder – he is the man who makes
them play, switches the ball left and right, terrific from set-pieces.
“Their wingers, they play a little bit narrow to create space for the fullbacks, a typical Ghanaian team – they play, they play, they play. We have to make sure we recover the ball as quick as possible because they are ball-players. They don’t kick and fight, they play good football.”
Tom Strand who smoked the peace pipe with his employers, is confident of his side chances, despite the difficulties they went through, which delayed their departure to South Africa.
