Jonathan Mensah Excels In Opening Leg Of Russian League Play Off

Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah excelled at the back for his Russian premier league Anzhi in a vital away triumph at Volgar.

The 25-year old centre back extended his recent fine form in the first leg of the promotion Play offs to earn his side the first leg advantage with a hard earned 0-1 away win. The former Evian Thonon defensive asset started a league game for the fourth time in a row after missing the last six for his relegation engulfed Anzhi Machachkala.

Mensah sealed a big money to the Russian top tier league but has so far been restricted to a paltry 7 appearances all season since his arrival from French aide Evian Thonon Gillard. Anzhi Machachkala skipped the drop just by a point in a dreadful campaign by the Russian giants.

A late strike from Yaanil Boli handed Anzhi the advantage ahead of the return leg on Friday. Elsewhere in the play offs, crocked Rabiu Mohammed was missing from the Kuban side that limped home in the first leg against Tom Tomsk in another 1-0 triumph.
