Gianni Infantino, President of the World football governing body, FIFA has warned it’s member associations not to misuse development grants.
The former UEFA General Secretary was speaking at his first congress as president following his election in February earlier this year.
In his manifesto, Infantino promised member associations the support to grow the game in their respective countries with the requisite knowledge and financial assistance.
According to finance director Markus Kattner, FIFA’s accounts are “solid” and confirmed an increase in the development budget from $900m to $1.417m.
Financial assistance for individual federations would rise from $400,000-a-year to $1.25m-a-year within a tightly-audited, redesigned structure.
After confirming the money that will be allocated to member associations,
Infantino said: “We have six development programmes and 10 budgetary regulations. It’s a mess and it has to be streamlined.”
And he followed up with a warning:
“Don’t betray us. Don’t misuse the money or we will have no mercy.”
His predecessor Joseph Sepp Blatter regime was accused of misusing development funds.
Infantino also revealed the process for choosing the 2026 World Cup host: “it is crucial we have a bullet-proof process in place . . . we have to get it right.”
