Cristiano Ronaldo has broken Luis Figo’s record for the most appearances for Portugal following his inclusion in the starting line-up for tonight’s game against Austria.
Ronaldo is set to win his 128th cap for his country, with the winger having scored 58 goals for Portugal since making his debut 13 years ago.
After Portugal were held to a hugely frustrating draw by Iceland in their opening fixture of Euro 2016, Ronaldo will be seeking to make a major impact tonight as his side attempt to get the better of Austria.
Ronaldo was well marshalled by the Iceland defenders, and, although he had a pass success rate of 90%, he created just one chance and had a solitary effort on target.
The 31-year-old is already his country’s highest goalscorer ahead of the likes of Eusebio and Pauleta, and he will be looking to add to his tally tonight.
Last year Ronaldo was named the best Portuguese player of all time by the Portuguese Football Federation. His country’s hopes of success at this summer’s tournament rest largely on his shoulders, with Fernando Santos’ squad not containing a wide array of talented players
After today’s game, Portugal will switch their focus to their final group stage fixture against Hungary on Wednesday.
