South Africa-based John Paintsil says he will play in Ghana league before retirement

South Africa-based defender John Paintsil insists he will return to play in the Ghana Premier League before retiring from football.

The 34-year-old who currently plays for Maritzburg United is widely considered to be winding down on his illustrious professional career which began way back in 1999 with Berekum Arsenal.

Paintsil then played briefly for Liberty Professionals before returning back to Arsenal ahead of his first move abroad to Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2002.

The right-back is however best remembered for his time in English football where he played for West Ham and more prominently for Fulham.

Now with Maritzburg United in the twilight of his career, the 2008 African Cup bronze medalist says he would return to play in the Ghanaian top flight before he finally hangs up his boots.

“I will play in the Ghana Premier League before I retire from professional football,” he said.

Paintsil remain one of the longest serving players to have donned the national team jersey of Ghana.

The experienced defender remains defiant of his chances to earn a recall to the Black Stars where he is 12 caps away from achieving a milestone of 100 international appearances.
