Gov"t Not Good To Football - Jawula

Former Ghana Football Association president, Alhaji Lepowura MND Jawula has accused government of been a contributing  factor to the decline of local football.

Ghana’s sole representative in the CAF Champions League this year, Ashanti Gold were eliminated from the competition last Sunday and that has extended Ghanaian clubs failure to reach the Group stage of the CAF Champions League since 2012.

And Alhaji MND Jawula believes government’s failure to offer financial support to clubs when they qualify to represent the country is mitigating factor in their quest for success in the continental inter-club football competition.

“All governments have not been good to football and I have been saying this over and over and when we qualified for Africa we are among the few countries where government pays nothing to the clubs,” Jawula told Joy Sports

“If government should even handle the flight and accommodation for our clubs that qualify then they will have money to left over to pay extra bonuses which will motivate the players.

“There are a lot we are not getting right and I think our football authorities should sit with government and to avoid quarreling and fighting over unnecessary World Cup money, let us make the government know where the difficulty is so they can support.” He opined.

Ashanti Gold lost out their place in the competition after suffering a 3-2 aggregate loss to MO Bejaia. Medeama SC remains Ghana’s only Africa representative in the continental inter-club football competition.

New Edubiase To Get Stadium

The Government of Ghana, through President John Dramani Mahama has  revelaed designs has been completed for the construction of a new stadium in New Edubiase.

The president of Ghana in a State of the Nation Address in Parliament earlier today, revealed that New Edubiase, a suburb in the Ashanti Region will get a new stadium.

“In addition to the construction of the Cape Coast stadium, which has been completed, we have completed the drawings and bills of quantities for the construction of the New Edubiase Sports Stadium,” Mr Mahama said.

Presently, the country can boast of the Accra, Kumasi, Essipong, and Tamale sports stadia, and the yet-to-be inaugurated Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

And should the construction of the New Edubiase sports stadium begin, it bring the number of stadia in the country to six.

New Edubiase boasts of a premier league club called New Edubiase United.

The club currently uses the Obuasi Len Clay stadium as their home grounds, but will have a place to call their own when the stadium is completed in the future.

Mr Mahama, however, did not state when construction work will begin

Gov"t owes GHALCA GHS 47,000.00

GHALCA organised competitions ticketing chairman, Nana Oduro Sarfo has revealed that government of Ghana owes the association about GHS 47, 000.00 for organising the President Cup.

GHALCA, the mother body of all league clubs in the country, organises the country’s annual republic day dubbed the President Cup.

Of late, Ghanaian football fans are given the opportunity to watch the match for free and government bares the cost.

However, government has not honoured their promises made to GHALCA to open the gates to football fans for free whilst they bare the cost.

“We have played three president cup matches at the Accra Sports Stadium and anytime we finish the government owes us. The government has always been with the excuse that of people won’t come to the venue to watch the match if they are charged and that, it will be bad for the government people don’t come, but they will end up not paying us for not charging,” the former Berekum Chelsea Chief executive officer told sportscrusader.com

“I am the ticketing committee chairman and i can tell you government owes us huge sums of money. We are owed about GHS 47,000  and it will not happen under my administration.” He added.

Nana Oduro Sarfo, who has confirmed his candidature to dislodge Alhaji Raji to the chairmanship position in April’s elections also revealed that of he’s given mandate to lead the association, he will play his first president cup match in Kumasi.

“I am thinking of playing my first president cup at the Baba Yara sports stadium in Kumasi if I am given the mandate.” He said.

GHALCA will go to congress on Tuesday February 16 to fix a date for April’s elections.

Gov"t Announces End To Load Shedding

Government has announced an official end to the four-year long load shedding exercise which plagued the country.

In a statement signed by the head of Public Affairs of the Ministry of Power Kweku Sersah-Johnson, Wednesday, government thanked Ghanaians for their patience during the difficult times.

The announcement comes two days before the January 1 2016 deadline given by the Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor.

He had vowed to resign if the perennial power crisis continued after the end of the year.

It appears however that government has resolved the crisis.

Gov"t Sets Jan. 5 Meeting With Labour Over Utility Tariff Increase

President John Mahama has authorized a meeting with Organised Labour after hikes in utility tariffs sent ripples of discontent among public sector workers.

Employment Minister Haruna Iddrisu confirmed the January 5, 2016 meeting to Joy News Tuesday.

The government team is expected to dialogue with Ghana Employment Association, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and Trades Union Congress.

Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced in early December, electricity and water tariffs would go up by 59.2% and 67.2% respectively.

Labour haboured hopes that PURC would announce an increase not exceeding 50 percent even though the utility companies proposed an increase of between 129 and 400 percent.

It was signed by TUC General Secretary, Kofi Asamoah, and representatives of Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Judicial Services Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) and the Coalition Of Concerned Teachers (CCT).

The PURC’s Executive Secretary, Samuel Sarpong, has however explained, the new tariffs have already been gazetted and hence cannot be changed.

“When a tariff is gazetted, it becomes effective,” he explained.

Documents from the Office of the Chief of Staff, sighted by Joy News suggest that government has now taken over the negotiations.

“We need to get a middle ground”, Haruna Iddrisu told Joy FM.
