Gabon goes gaga as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returns with CAF African Player of the Year award

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given a hero’s welcome on his return to Gabon fresh from being named the CAF African Footballer of the Year on Thursday.


The Dortmund striker was greeted by scored of people at the international airport in Libreville.


Aubameyang waved and displayed his award to the cheering crowd as he was driven away to the Presidential Villa to meet up with President Ali Bongo.

The 26-year-old made history by being the first Gabonese to be crowned the King of African.


Aubameyang achieved this feat against Ivorian superstar Yaya Toure and influential Ghana forward Andre Ayew at a ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday.


The former Saint Etienne striker who is wanted at English club Arsenal is expected to fly back to his base in Germany on Friday night.

Ghana forward Andre Ayew is dressed in an exquisite white jacket as he made his way to the hall in Abuja for the Glo-CAF awards gala currently underway.


The Swansea City star had arrived in the Nigerian capital a few hours to the event in the company of his legendary father Abedi Pele and brother Rahim Ayew.


Ayew is gunning for the top individual award on the continent against Ivorian star Yaya Toure and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 25-year-old while making his way into the hall staging the ceremony, run into the former coach of Zambia and Cote d’Ivore Herve Renard.


The duo worked together during the Frenchman’s time as assistant coach of the Black Stars between 2006-2008.


He also had a brief chat and a laugh with his co-competitor Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.


Ayew is hoping to emulate the feat chalked by his legendary father by being named the Best Player on the continent for the first time in his so far illustrious career.

Edwin Gyamfi arrives in Abuja to recieve CAF award in memory of departed father, C.K Gyamfi

Edwin Gyamfi has arrived in Abuja to receive a special award in honour of the memory of late father C.K Gyamfi at the CAF African Player of the Year awards gala on Thursday.


CAF will be honouring Gyamfi who led Ghana to three African Cup of Nations titles.


The former player and coach died late last year after losing his long-standing battle with illness.


His immense achievements with the Black Stars however lives on and will be duly recognized by the continent’s football governing body at its flagship awards on Thursday.


Ghana forward Andre Ayew has also arrived in Abuja to contest the African Player of the Year award.


He is up against Ivorian star Yaya Toure and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon.
