Captain of the national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, Suleiman Tetteh has rubbished claims that, the team failed to qualify for 2016 Rio Olympic Games, due to their demand for per diems.

Mr. Gideon Quartey, the President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federations (GABF), was reported to have said that, the team failed to qualify for the competition during the qualifiers in Cameroon, because of the demand for per diem by the boxers.

Tetteh, described the claims as “total lie” saying “we never demanded for money because we knew when we qualify to the Olympic Games, we will be rewarded well, so why should we do that.

“If you see how the likes of Azumah, Musah Rahman and Abdul Rahman fought in Cameroon, you realise we wanted to qualify”, captain Sulemanu Tetteh told Starr FM in Accra

The Black Bombers have widely been criticized for their failure to secure a single berth to this year’s multi sports event in Brazil, after the sports ministry doled out $20,000 to aid their travel to Cameroon for the qualification.

Team Ghana was represented by eight male boxers with one female boxer, but none made it to the finals, making it the worse results for Ghana’s boxing history for the past 20 years.

GABA Disappointed With MOYS & NSA Treatment

Gideon Quartey, President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has admitted the association is very disappointed in both the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) and the National sports authority (NSA) treatment towards the Amateur boxers (Bombers) Olympic preparation.

 

 

The team is currently managing with non-residential camping at the D.G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Stadium after the Black Bombers were unable to secure camping space at the Theodosiah Okoh National Hockey Pitch – the reason being that the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association is unable to raise an initial amount of Ghc1,000.oo (USD$257) requested from the National Sports Authority (NSA), who manage the facility.

 

The president admitted the association has been surprised and disappointed with the treatment meted out to the bombers who are Ghanaians preparing to represent the nation and been asked to pay amount before using a state facility is preposterous.

 

“I am a little down because we have struggled to gather these boys and the nation has deliberately been of less assistance to the association. The boys (boxers) who will be representing the nation and salute the national anthem have totally neglected and no input to support the boys going into Olympic qualifiers,” he mentioned to sportscrusader.com

 

 

The Black Bombers are scheduled to participate in a qualifier in Cameroun next month and will present 12 boxers for the event.

The president of Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Gideon Quartey has informed sportscrusader.com the Black Bombers have picked the positives from the negative publicity their Olympic games preparation has gotten them.

 

The Black Bombers are unable to secure camping space at the Theodosiah Okoh National Hockey Pitch – the reason being that the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation is unable to raise an initial amount of 1000 GHC ($257) requested from the National Sports Authority (NSA), who manage the facility.

 

Gideon Quartey in an interview with sportscrusader.com revealed the association has been able to psyche the boys up to be much ready and tougher for the games than before all thanks to the unfair treatment meted out to the boxers.

 

He said, “We have conscientised the boys, we have spoken to them to see that their future is at stake and though they will be representing the nation it is their individual names that will be marketed in the long run should they excel”.

“Initially you (Boxer) qualify to the Olympic games as an individual who is there to fly the flag of Ghana and that should be enough motivation to carry them through,” he added.

 

The Black Bombers are scheduled for a three nation tournament in Cote d’Ivoire later this year.

President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), Gideon Quartey has raised red flag to the National Sports Authority (NSA) and Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) to be cautious with the reckless manner in which sports athletes and the discipline are being handled.

 

 

The Ghana Amateur boxers popularly referred to as ‘Black Bombers’ are currently in a non-residential camping as the boxers gear up for preparations in African Olympic qualifier competitions. The Ghana  Athletics Association (GAA) have also cried out for financial assistance from both the MOYS and NSA as it is making preparations to the main event in Rio extremely difficult.

 

Speaking in an interview to sportscrusader.com, Gideon Quartey could not hold back the hardship the federation is going through as they shape up the boxers for qualifiers. The boxers according to the president are feeling motivated with the idea of qualifying to the Olympic games though the NSA and MOYS have rejected their duties to assist the discipline.

“Nobody seems to care about how athletes prepare for competitions here in Ghana. Our effort to request financial assistance from the MOYS has like always proven futile.”

 

“Some of the boxers are fed and losing hope on the nation as they consider switching nationality or forfeit the sport of boxing. As preparations go on we can’t tell if the ministry will help financially but the Ghana Olympic committee has assured us of some assistance to cushion our burden.”

Black Bombers Camp In Readiness For Rio 2016 Qualifiers

The Ghana amateur boxers nicknamed – Black Bombers are currently in a non-residential camping as the race to qualify for the Olympic games in Brazil, Rio 2016.

 

The athletes are scheduled to travel to participate in Olympic qualifiers with 10 male boxers and 2-female boxers have been grouped to participate in the qualifiers as Ghana aims for gold at the event.

Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation president, Gideon Quartey admitted preparations for the boxers are well outlined and planned as they gear up for qualifying competition and hopefully the main event in Rio.

 

But speaking to sportscrusader.com, the president opined what he believes is the total neglect of the sport by the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and sports (MOYS) and this act is gradually destroying interest in boxing.

 

“It’s sad nobody cares about boxing; the boxers are training but their camping is a non-residential one. These are athletes who are going there to represent the nation (Ghana) and it is sad,” he told sportscrusader.com

 

“It is so sad going for an Olympic qualifier and the boxers feel neglected as if no one cares. It happened last year when the boxers were preparing to travel to Casablanca (Morocco), we had our budget slashed and we were forced to improvise and seek late sponsorship deals,” he added.
