Kotoko To Pull Out Of Prez Cup

Record Ghana Premier League champions, Asante Kotoko could pull out of the 2016 President’s Cup due to the congestion of their league fixtures.

The Porcupine Warriors has been invited by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), organisers of the above cup match which is played played annually in honour the of the sitting president on Republic day (July 1).

But due to their engagement in league fixture against Wa All Stars on June 29, the Kumasi-based club are considering withdrawing from the match scheduled against fiercest rivals, Hearts of Oak.

“We have put the necessary arrangements in place for this year’s [President] Cup, so I can say that all is set,” GHALCA Spokesman, Somtymer Otuo-Acheampong said in an interview with Accra FM.

“However, Kotoko have complained they won’t be able to travel all the way from Kumasi after their League game against WA All Stars in midweek.” He added.

Despite the proximity of the two games, GHALCA are putting in efforts to ensure Michael Osei’s men honour the match.

“We understand their situation but we are putting in place measures to ensure they honour the match.” he stated.

This year’s President Cup format has been changed. The competition will played across the country, but the MAIN match will be played at the Accra sports stadium.

AshGold v Asokwa Prez Cup Fixture Cancelled

The 2016 President Cup fixture between Ashanti Gold and Asokwa Deportivo has been cancelled, Sportscrusader.com understands.

It is unclear why the fixture has been cancelled, but Sportscrusader.com sources say the purpose of the game is to attract spectators to the venue and organisers are unsure the fixture will provide them that.

There are proposals from some officials of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) to replace the two with Dunkwa United and Starke FC or Okyeman Planners and a yet to be chosen team to fill the gap.

There are also fears Asante Kotoko might pull out due to the proximity ( June 29) of the club’s league fixture against Wa All Stars and the day of the match.

The President Cup will played on July 1 (a Republic Day in Ghana) in honour of the sitting president of th country.

MultiCredit To Sponsor Prez Cup

Financial Institution, MultiCredit has been contacted by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), to be the headline sponsor for the 2016 President Cup.

The financial institution and other corporate bodies were contacted about a month ago by the new executive council after they won the elections earlier this year, and MultiCredit has given the greenlight to meet them at the negotiations table.

The other corporate bodies which were also approached by GHALCA gave them ‘verbal assuarance’ of their readiness to come on board.

Negotiations with MultiCredit is far advanced and GHALCA are confident they will seal the deal soon.

GHALCA promised government they will take over the financial burden in this year’s President Cup and have been in the market to fulfil their promise.

This year’s President Cup is likely to be played across the country should clubs, apart from Hearts and Kotoko who have been contacted to play in Accra, in the other regions which GHALCA have written to, confirm their readiness to participate in the annual cup match.

This year’s cup is also likely to have former Presidents seated at the stands as proposed by the GHALCA hierarchy in their bid to weed out the politics associated with the Cup match.

GHALCA To Finance Prez Cup

The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), will take over the financial responsibilities in this year’s President Cup and other matches to be played in subsequent years.

The President Cup is played annually on Republic day (July 1) in honour of the sitting president, thus, government finances the organisation of the match.

However, the new executive council, headed by Kudjoe Fianoo, as part of its changes to the association, wants to take over the financial burden from the state.

Sources say the purpose of organising the competition was not to drain the public purse, but honour the President.

GHALCA are on the market for sponsors for this year’s cup, and the feedback from corporate bodies approached to sponsor the match has been positive.

MultiCredit, one of the financial institutions which was approached about a month ago, has confirmed their readiness to be the headline sponsor.

Other corporate bodies (names withheld because they gave ‘verbal assurances’) are likely to confirm their support for the competition in the coming days.

This year’s President Cup will see other clubs in some regions in the country, play each other on the Republic Day.

However, the main centre of attraction will be at the Accra sports stadium as the two most fiercest rivals, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko square on the same day.
