Know Your GHALCA Chairmanship Candidates: Nana Oduro Sarfo

If football have millions of passionate people, Nana Oduro Sarfo is one of them, if football boast of only one passionate person, then it is Nana Oduro Sarfo.

His thirst for football goes beyond that young man who fails to sleep after a first date with his dream girl.

The confidence with which he speaks about football, people in football and the need for Ghana football to grow is condescending.

From the stumpy homes in Kaneshie where he had his elementary education to Accra City Campus where he had his diploma, Nana Oduro Sarfo’s journey is one he will reminisce with nostalgia.

Born in April 27, 1962, Nana Oduro Sarfo had his elementary and Secondary education in Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra.

He attended Kaneshie Secondary Technical School before enrolling to the Accra City Campus to study Diploma in Land Violations.

Whilst seeking for knowledge in school, Nana Oduro Sarfo was also into football, played a vital role in the success of king Faisal Babes in the  early 2000’s.

In those years, King Faisal won the Coca-Cola Top 4 competition, played in CAF’s elite club football competition twice but were unable to reach the money zone.

He moved from King Faisal to Eleven Wise, and led the team to the premiership. He also served as an Accra representative of the Club and the Operations Manager.

A short journey across Europe came his way, and he took the opportunity to acquire more knowledge in the game with a trip to Turkey. He had an attachment with Ankara Giuchie before returning to Ghana in 2007.

Mr Oduro Sarfo joined Berekum Chelsea, served as the Chief Executive Officer of the club and was key to their success.

They won the Ghana League, played in the CAF Champions league, where they reached the money zone, placing third behind Al Ahly and TP Mazembe.

He was instrumental in the transfer of players like Gladson Awako, Solomon Asante and Kissi Boateng to the TP Mazembe.

Later in the year, he joined GHALCA – the mother body of all league clubs in Ghana.

He contested for the seat of the vice president in the association alongside Isaac Wilberforce Koomson and  Jones Abu Alhassan but he was beaten to it by Mr Koomson.

He is currently the ticketing chairman of GHALCA organised competitions.

Isaac Koomson To Introduce Welfare Scheme At GHALCA

Vice Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Isaac Koomson has promised to introduce welfare scheme to club administrators.

Isaac Wilberforce Koomson is in the race for the top-most position at GHALCA, and he has revealed one of his visions for the association is to repay them their services for  football development.

Speaking to sportscrusader.com, the Aduana Stars Accra representative said: “Under my administration, i will introduce welfare scheme for football administrators. Almost everything about their life is football and they invest a lot into football. So after being in the game for 20 or 30 years, putting it so much, what are the benefits?,” Isaac Koomson quizzed.

“That’s why I am coming in with the pension and welfare scheme. I am looking at it in different angles: if you bereaved, we don’t just come and cheer you up and give you individual donations.

“I want us to have a proper package for the person who is bereaved, and I think doing this you’re motivating the club administrators to put in their best so that football will be ran professionally,” he said.

Wilberforce Koomson will wrestle with Cudjoe Fianoo, Kofi Poku and Nana Oduro Sarfo for the GHALCA chairmanship position come April elections.

My Position Sidelined Me - Isaac Koomson

Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) chairmanship aspirant, Isaac Wilberforce Koomson says his position as vice chairman did not give him the room to explore his ideas.

The Aduana Stars Accra representative, has thrown his hat into the race for the top-most position of the Association – Chairman in their upcoming polls.

He believes he has the credentials to lead the body which represents all league clubs in the country.

“I have been vice chairman of GHALCA for four years and I had lots of ideas and potential just that our laws does not permit you as vice chairman to come out with what is in you so that people can realize your true potential,” Isaac Koomson told sportscrusader.com.

Mr Koomson said that his position as vice chairman made things difficult for his ideas to be bought to the fore. He said his chairman never believed in delegation and that he sidelined him.

“When you’re the vice chairman of an association your role is always not defined, even the vice president of Ghana (Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur’s) role is not defined. All you’re told is that, you act in the absence of the President or Chairman and so was my position,’ he said.

“And that means that if my chairman is available 24/7, it means I have nothing to do. It also means that your chairman can only assign you duties, but if your chairman does not assign you duties, if your chairman does not believe in delegation, it means you’re out and that’s where I found myself,’ he added.

“There were so many situations where I had very good suggestions that the body could carry forward but it never came to see the light of day,” Mr Koomson said.

GHALCA Schooled On Marketing At Congress

Pro-vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Dr. Oko has revealed to the executives and members of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) at the association’s congress on how to market and sell ‘football’ in the country.

Speaking at the congress, Dr. Oko admitted Ghana football has challenges like all other institutions but the crowd of spectators that troop into our various stadia to watch traditional clubs play each other like, Eleven Wise against Hassacas in the Sekondi-Takoradii derby, Hearts vs Olympics in the Accra derby, Bofoakwa play BA united in the Sunyani derby and so many more justifies there’s still hope for football in Ghana.

The pro-vice chancellor during his power point presentation outlined the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that face football in Ghana. During the presentation, Dr. Oko listed advised the administrators of the game to in addition to the strength of football in Ghana (enthusiastic football  fans, football talents and the global appeal to the game) should work around the weaknesses of the game (poor football pitches, few super stars, poor remuneration,

He said, “Ghanaian football clubs should focus on the style of play exhibited on the field and the rest (sponsorship and the decline in spectatorship) would increase as the admirers of the game so desire.”

“The weaknesses in relation to quality of football, sponsorship and the negative perception view carried by critics and skeptics of the game will be curtailed only if the clubs work around it than complaining,” he added.

GHALCA will go to the poll on April 21st to elect new chairman, vice-chairman and executives for the next four years.

Referees Warned On Home Teams Influence

Ghanaian referees have been brandished with names such as – incompetent, clueless and the top of name calling is being corrupt for receiving petty-cash from teams and influence games to their benefits.

The Ghanaian premier league is battling with brand image, style of play exhibited from teams and sponsorship deals which tops them all. The debate has been going on whether referees game or match bills should be footed by clubs or remain the sole responsibility of the Ghana football association.

Retired referee and now a reverend minister, Nsiah Boafo has called on the FA not to buy into the idea of teams footing bills of referees as it will be a breeding ground for more match-fixing allegations. In an interview with Boss fm, Mr. Nsiah Boafo said, “I suggest the GFA should be in-charge of the referees – food, hotel, security and all that is needed for referees to protect our game just as international referees enjoy.”

In an interesting banter experience Ghanaian referee, Ladbridge has talked down Rev. Boafo’s submission and believes the clubs taking responsibility of referees bill for a game will only challenge the men-in-black to be more professional and officiate in fairness.

In an interview with Boss fm, referee Ladbridge said, ‘In the game of football there are human and technical errors. there are instances where the referee might be making genuine mistakes and some deliberate as well but his conscience should serve him better.

“If you as a good referee allow the home team influence your decision it casts a slur on you as a person and even your kids will be mocked at school for your poor performance"” he added.

Ghana’s Joseph Lamptey and David Laryea are part of the selected referees – as referee and assistant referee at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.

Accra Sports Stadium Gathers Rubbish

The Accra sports stadium is a national property that has a sole purpose of entertaining fans with the world’s beautiful  game of football and other sports that have centres allocated within the stadium – lawn tennis, karate and so on. The stadium refurbished to a 40,000 all sitting capacity before Ghana hosted the African cup of nations – AFCON in 2008 was a beautiful spectacle when it was commissioned by ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor.

Almost six years after the continental piece the stadium has acted as the home ground like it was before for Accra based and one of Ghana’s biggest clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and also hosted boxing bouts – notably the Bukom Banku vs Ayitey Powers  first showdown, music shows and an annual church service on the 31st December of every year by the International central gosple church – ICGC.

On a tour of the stadium recently, sportscrusader.com can reveal the state of the stadium leaves a sour taste in the mouth and an awful sight when one takes a retrospective view when the stadium was officially opened to the public when the Ghana Black stars played the first game of the AFCON 2008 tournament.

Accra sports stadium turning into a refuse site

Accra sports stadium turning into a refuse site

The metal bars that hold the stadium together are at the mercy of the weather as they rust away swiftly without any attendance to halt this gradually developing disaster. The playing surface which ought to be green and well mowed to allow the free-flow of football during matches is turning into a potato field but that discussion like the state of the whole stadium is for another day.

The Accra sports stadium in the absence of the Ghana premier league and enough games is turning into the ‘Accra refuse site’. The stands that faces opposite the Accra Conference centre is gradually turning into refuse site as rubbish gathered by the sanitation workers at the stadium is dumped there. It started small like all the filth that has engulfed Ghana and the current state is much appalling for a country that beats its chest to be a harbour of  African football.

The heap of refuse has overflown the refuse container that is meant to contain it and is gathering pace from the ground and is slowly catching-up with the height of the refuse container. Whoever (herein the National sports authority – NSA) is in-charge of sanitation at the Accra Sports stadium seems to have forgotten his job and his immediate attention has to be drawn to the mess gathering at his doorsteps in-case he might have forgotten what the taxpayers paid him as salary is meant for.

The Accra sports stadium on February 20th when the Ghana premier league commences for the 2015/16 season will be the venue as Accra Hearts of Oak host New Edubiase and that sight should have left the venue before it develops into a cholera epidemic breaking scene.
