Things We Learnt From Kotoko 3rd League Defeat

Kumasi Asante Kotoko suffered their third league defeat against Aduana Stars on Match Week Six action of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League (GPL) last Sunday.

Yahaya Mohammed stunned his former employers, dropping them to the foot of the Premier League table with the only goal ofthe match.

Here are three things we learnt.

Kotoko Don’t Learn:

Asante Kotoko this time last year were in a similar situation, forcing the Board to replace Mas ud Didi Dramani as coach.

He was sent on accumulated leave and was eventually replaced by David Duncan. He steered the team to finish second, but the Board failed to learn from the situation that caused their downfall last season.

Internal bickering, players tagged ‘enemies of a regime’ and Board and Management backbiting. The issues has eaten deep into the players and that was key in their defeat.

David Duncan is not Kotoko’s problem.

In the game of football, the crashing block fall on the head of the coach when results are not positive. David Duncan must accept responsibility because he chaired the team that released 14 players and recruited 12.

But the former is miles away from the source of the problem. The internal scheming to get him sacked began after the two all stalemate against Medeama SC and the team has always played to the voices of the powerful people in the club.

The boys played above themselves in last Sunday’s, but the spirit that hold a team to victory is sold.

Kotoko players are a disgrace to the profession. 

Bad results are inevitable when off the the pitch issues takes center stage. Kumasi Asante Kotoko has been hit with bad media reports since the opening day loss to WAFA, but the players have failed to wake.

The playing body’s freedom is restricted under Coach David Duncan,  but to let the coach down to satisfy your selfish desire is criminal in the game of football.

Eric Donkor Returns For Kotoko

Kumasi Asante Kotoko’ s left winger, Eric Donkor is in contention for a place in the line up when they take on Liberty Professionals on Sunday.

The versatile winger has been out for three weeks with a foot injury, but has returned to training with the team and could be in line to feature for the club again this season.

His return is a major boost for the club that is under extreme pressure to return to winning ways as they sit bottom of the log following last Sunday’s 0-1 loss to Aduana Stars in their last league game.

Kotoko Needs Their Own Stadium - Duncan

David Duncan, head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, has suggested that the club should get its own stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors uses the state owned stadium, Baba Yara in Kumasi for their matches in all competitions for the past five or so decades.

But David Duncan has suggested that the team’s ‘fortunes will be changed drastically’ if they have their own stadium.

“The performance of the team was good but I think if we have our own stadium like they [Aduana] do, Kotoko’s fortunes would change drastically,” Duncan said.

“I do not think any team can beat Kotoko if we also had a stadium like they do here. In that case, we would win every home game,” he added.

Duncan explained that a team with it’s own pitch enjoy undue advantage.

“I’m saying if Kotoko have their own stadium like it is here, I think that Kotoko will win the league as long as they want to,” Duncan repeated.

The former AshGold boss also refused to accept defeat, saying the result was not a fair reflection of the game.

“The performance of the boys was great and fantastic. I haven’t seen anything like this before from the Kotoko players ever since I took over the job,” he added.

Kotoko dropped to the foot of the table after their 1-0 loss to Aduana Stars on Sunday. They will host Liberty Professionals who trashed defending champions AshGold 5-1 at the Carl Reindorf Park on Sunday.
