Hard-talking sports Journalist, Owusu Bempah has admitted that he sees nothing wrong with the Sports Ministers plan of reviewing the bonus for the Ghana Black Stars.
The Ghana Black Stars playing body receive US$10,000 as winning bonus for games played during qualification for competitions and this huge sum has been frowned upon by many Ghanaians and the latest to add his voice is the newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.
The former sports Journalist turned politician has been loud on his plans of meeting the players to review the sum as it is gradually becoming a problem for the ministry to bear.
Vanderpuye has been bashed by some section of the media for taking this stance but Bempah agrees and believes it’s about time the amount is reviewed.
He said, “after being in the World Cup on three consecutive occasions and not being able to win the trophy African cup of nations, I doubt the players deserve the huge sum of winning bonuses given them each time they win a qualification game.”
“There should be a qualification bonus structure and not game bonuses as it is now so that when you qualify for a tournament you will be given ‘X’ amount and should you win the trophy this is what you’ll get then,” he added.
“it doesn’t surprise me with the public out cry as this nation rewarded the stars for not winning a trophy and thus I think it’s in the right direction if the minister wants to review it.”
