Some of the most established golfers in Ghana are set to show off their golfing skills at the third edition of the South Africa (SA) Freedom Day Golf tournament to be held on Saturday, 30 April 2016 at the Celebrity Golf Course in Tema.

Freedom Day is an annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. Peace, unity, the preservation and the restoration of human dignity, hallmark Freedom Day celebrations on the 27 April of each year.

Over 300 golfers are expected to take part in this event to demonstrate their solidarity to South Africa’s Freedom Day celebration.

Corporate organisations partnering this prestigious event include South African Airways, South African Tourism (SAT), Cummins Ghana and other South African Companies.

The South Africa Freedom Day Golf, is organised by Global Media Alliance in collaboration with the Celebrity Golf Club and the South African High Commission.

It is expected to gather both the South African and Ghanaian Business communities in Ghana in a relaxed, friendly and thrilling atmosphere.

Medeama Calls On PLB To Postpone GPL Fixtures

Ghana’s only remaining club in Africa’s inter club competition, Medeama SC, is calling on the Premier League Board (PLB) to postpone the Ghana Premier League Match Week 8 fixtures due to the Tarkwa based club’s Confederations Cup second leg tie with Al-Ahly Shendi on April 20.

The Mauves and Yellow will play host to the Sudanese side in a crucial return leg at the Sekondi stadium after playing out a goal-less draw in the first leg in Sudan.

Coincidentally, Ghana’s first mid-week fixtures of the 2015/2016 campaign are scheduled to take place on the same day – prompting officials to request for postponement amidst widespread fears the Premier League games will overshadow the side’s important continental game.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the club’s deputy communication director, Patrick Akoto noted that he believes the Premier League games should be postponed insisting it is nothing new.

“I think the game should be postponed. We have done it for several clubs in the past and won’t be the first,” Akoto opined.

“We are the only team representing Ghana in Africa at the moment and therefore we need the collective support of everybody.

“Indeed postponing the league won’t be the first and not sure will be the last. I don’t think a deferment will spark any confusion or throw the calendar wide open.

“If the games are played the attention of the media will be shifted. We want the focus to be on Medeama next week”, he added.

Patrick Akoto further appealed to the Ghana FA and the Premier League Board to consider his club’s proposal.

Medeama hold the aces ahead of the reverse fixture after grinding out a pulsating 0-0 draw in the first leg in Sudan.

Abigail Kwarteng Qualifies for African Championship

Former Junior National Athlete Abigail Kwarteng becomes first athlete to qualify for the 2016 African Championships in Athletics after clearing 1.77m(PB) to meet the GAA’s B-Standard for the competition.

Abigail, 19, also the reigning Ghana University Sports Association high jump champion recorded a personal best jump at last Saturday’s National Open Championship held at the El Wak Stadium to book the first ticket for the championship slated for Durban, South Africa in July.

She comfortably cleared the mark by two metres at her second attempt, however, her feat did not meet the 2016 Summer Olympic Games high jump entry mark of 1.93m required to qualify for the global showppiece slated for August in Rio, Brazil.

An excited Abigail later told the sportscrusader.com that she was thrilled to have qualified for the African championship at her first athletics competition of the year.

She said, “I am very happy and very excited and I knew I was going to do it before I came here. I had already jumped 1.70 to win the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) high jump so my target was to qualify for the championship.

“The poor state of the tracks was a hindrance because you have to be careful in your run-up. I even twisted my ankle on my last jump which was very painful, so I wish the authorities would fix it for us because my major target for the saeson is to qualify for the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, other athletes who participated in the multi-sport national open failed to produce performances required to qualify for the 2016 Olympics and African Championships.

The English top tier league has never been so reliant on African Stars until this Mahrez- Ighalo dominated season. Can you think of any particular season solely dependent on African stars better than this campaign?.

It is usually touted as the most competitive cosmopolitan league around the world not just because of its multinational nature but the ease with which it can be assesed.

The 2015/16 season could not have done any better to the ever burgeoning rise in fortunes of the poor and unexposed African players.

Bedevilled with financial setbacks and lack of basic sporting facilities, the poor African player is left under the stewardship of raw and unrefined coaches who are bent on winning matches and not player’s technical development.

From Tony Yegoala to Austin Okocha, Yakubu Aigbemi to Didier Zokora, Didier Drogba to Micheal Essien, the current crop of players in the premiership look destined to rewrite the history books in the most decorated and globally accessed league.

For easy analytical comparison, African players are being compared with their English opponents for better understanding of their decisive season.

Of the 608 players in the top flight league, only 47(representing 7.73 percent) hails from Africa as compared to the 213 from English soil (representing 35.03 percent).

The numbers however leaned in favour of the hazy, dry and unfriendly African continent despite the numerical disadvantage.

African trinity of Odion Ighalo, Riyad Mahrez and Andre Ayew teamed up to rack in an incredible 36 goals two fewer than Vardy, Kane and Defoe for their English counterparts.

Nigerian Odion Ighalo registered an incredible 15 goals for Watford whiles Riyad Mahrez has made his $300,000 summer arrival at the King Power the best of transfer business in the last few seasons.

The Foxes are currently seated at the top of the premiership with 15 games to go. Don’t forget Andre landed at the Liberty stadium as a free agent but has since bagged 8 goals in his debut season.
