Airtel Ghana Donates Footballs, Kits to Bebeto Football Academy

Airtel Ghana has donated footballs to Bebeto Football Academy, a second division side based in Sogakope in the Volta Region of Ghana as part of the company’s fulfilment of its promise made to the academy through Airtel Touching Lives television programme.

The donation is the latest in support of the Bebeto Football Academy after previous interventions that included football kits – training bibs & kits, jerseys, shin guards and   goal nets to set the Academy up for success in their division.

Martin ‘Bebeto’ Torku recognizing the potential and passion of the young lads in his community to play football and his own personal commitment to make an impact in the lives of young people in spite of difficulties and the lack of resources, initiated the Bebeto Football Academy a few years ago.

His great work with the young people in his community was recognized by the award-winning Airtel Touching Lives programme to benefit from training kits and a refresher course at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

Making the presentation, Richard Ahiagble, Head of Corporate Communications at Airtel Ghana remarked that his outfit was inspired by the commitment and passion that Martin brings to his work – identifying and grooming young football talents in his community and setting them up to achieve their dreams of becoming professional footballers.

He added that Airtel Ghana firmly believe that everyone has the power of potential – the innate ability to fully realise their potential giving the platform and the support.

According to Mr. Ahiagble, Martin’s story was one that resonated with the ethos of the Touching Lives Programme and we are happy to be part of his initiative to empower the young men in his academy to become the next generation of football greats for the country.

He continued that, Football is the passion of the nation and Airtel Ghana have invested in the sports through their grassroots talent search programme – Airtel Rising Stars to unearth and develop young and talented footballers from across the country, Many products of which have found their way into the various junior national football teams.

In his response, Martin Bebeto Torku, manager and coach of the Academy expressed his gratitude to Airtel Ghana noting that,  “we are very grateful to Airtel for supporting us. There will be no football games without the football kits and footballs. We are very pleased to receive these items. The opportunity to undergo a coaching training course to develop and sharpen my coaching skills will go a long way to impact positively on the Academy. On behalf of everyone at the Bebeto Football Academy, accept our deepest gratitude for your support”.

Airtel Ghana has over the years committed to augmenting government and the Ghana Football Association’s efforts to develop the game of football in the country with the introduction of Airtel Rising Stars, a credible under-17 football competition that gives males and females in school the opportunity to exhibit their talents to be groomed and drafted into the junior national teams.

The competition has produced many of the players who have represented Ghana at various FIFA organized age competitions.

Rio 2016: Ghanaian Boxer to Begin Gold Chase on Thursday

Ghana’s sole Boxing representative at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Abdul Omar Wahid will begin his quest for a gold medal with a bout against Argentinian Melian Alberto Ezequiel on Thursday August 11, 2016.

The 23 year old boxer who least expected his qualification is set to make history in his first appearance at the World stage and he is feverishly preparing for the bout.

He came fourth at the African games in Yaonde and will be fighting in the bantamweight division.

Wahid’s contender Alerto Melian lost a bantamweight bout at the summer 2012 Olympics against Sergey Vodopyanov but however his qualification to this stage proves his capabilities.

In an interview ahead of team Ghana’s departure last week, Wahid’s Coach Larteyquaye Lartey expressed optimism that his athlete can bring back home a medal.

“We are going to perform. Wahid deserves to be at the Olympics because he has sacrificed a lot, from Morocco, Cameroon and Congo. He has so many injuries but he fought himself through. I know God will help him to get a medal.” he said.

The boxer also expressed high hopes of winning a medal at the global showpiece.

“It is very difficult to qualify for the Olympics and I know it’s a very big platform. I don’t care about anyone but I know they are all good boxers. I am just training hard to bring out the best in me.”

Official: Andre Ayew Joins Westham For a Club Record Fee

Ghanaian international Andre Ayew has joined West Ham from Swansea City on a four-year deal, the club confirmed on Friday

West Ham said Ayew, 26, had joined for a club-record fee, reported to be £20 million

“I am very proud and happy to be at this magnificent Club. I am happy to be playing for these fans and I hope to make the people very happy here,” Ayew told West Ham’s website.

“The club have a lot of ambition and have a great manager. They want to become a bigger club every year and with the new Stadium and a new training ground, you can feel they are moving onto another level and I want to be part of this project.

“I want to train hard, do my job and show that I deserve to play for West Ham United. I want to give back to the manager and the fans the confidence they are showing me.”

The move comes on the same day that the Hammers announced the signing of Olympiakos left back Arthur Masuaka in the region of £6 million.

Ayew Set For £20m Westham Switch

West Ham United have moved a step closer to securing the signing of Andre Ayew after agreeing a fee of £20 million with Swansea City.

It was rumoured that the Hammers were in for the attacker last summer when he joined the Swans on a free transfer but, according to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old is close to moving to Slaven Bilic’s side.

The Ghanaian is expected to have his medical in East London over the weekend but the report indicates that Swansea will not sign off the deal unless they are able to add another forward to their ranks.

The south Wales side brought in Fernando Llorente on Friday but want to boost their own options before allowing Ayew, who scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season, to complete his move to the Hammers.

Swansea are reportedly talking to Atletico Madrid about a move to sign unwanted striker Borja Baston to replace Ayew.

The 23-year-old scored 18 La Liga goals while on loan at La Liga minnows Eibar last during the 2015/16 season.

It seems that should those negotiations go well then Ayew will be the latest West Ham recruit in what would be a record-breaking deal for the Irons.

The quoted £20m fee would smash the £15m West Ham paid for Andy Carroll in 2013.

GPL: Samudeen Returns For WAFA Clash

Highly rated midfielder, Samudeen Ibrahim is likely to feature for Hearts of Oak in their Ghana Premier League Match Week 23 clash with WAFA after cutting short the bereavement leave handed to him by the club to return to training.

The youngster lost his mother last weekend, but after the Islamic funeral rites came to an end on Monday, he decided to re-join the first team at training much to the surprise of the technical team.

Samudeen was given an unspecified leave of absence by head coach Sérgio Traguil but the young star turned up at training on Wednesday, just five days after the family bereavement.

He trained with the team at the Legon Park on Wednesday and at the Tema Sports Stadium on Thursday morning.

He is likely to train with the team on Friday as they wrap up preparation for Saturday’s league clash with WAFA.

It is however, still unclear whether he will be available for selection on Saturday but coach Sergio insists Samudeen loves to play.

“I am not surprised Samudeen came back so early,” Sergio said.

“He loves to play and he loves to play for me. I do not know yet whether he is in the right frame of mind to play on Saturday.”

Ghanaian Athletes Can"t Win Medals at Rio 2016- Former GAA Chief Coach

A former chief coach of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Mr.  Albert Nukpezah has expressed doubt over the chances of the country’s track and field athletes ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic games.

According to him, all the Ghanaian Athletes who have qualified for the games fall way below the standards required to make the medal podium.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SportsCrusader.com, Mr.  Nukpezah stated that, the athletes, despite qualifying for the Global showpiece, are only going there as mere participants and are not capable of winning anything.

“to be honest with you, we (team Ghana) are only going to represent in the games but medal-wise, we will do nothing”, he said, adding that, “Looking at the team, they are not adequately prepared. No camping, no motivation and all that and I don’t think we can do something meaningful at the games”.

Mr. Nukpezah further stated that The Ghana Olympics Committee (GOC), in the last four years, has not done enough to train athletes capable of winning laurels for the country.

He added that the GOC President, Professor Francis Dodoo should not remain at the helm of affairs, attributing Ghana’s poor preparations to the former Ghana athlete.

Accra West District League Set For August 20

The Accra West District Football Association (AWDFA) has set Saturday August 20, 2016 for the commencement of the District’s Third Division League, baring any unforseen circumstances.

The date was agreed upon at an emergency meeting with the clubs at the AWDFA office at Indafa Park in Accra on Tuesday.

The league which was originally scheduled to start in June 2016, was postponed due to the delays in the start of the Greater Accra Regional Division Two League which  begun last month.

Following the delay, some clubs in the District have opted out of the 2015/2016 but that has not prevented the District’s football governing body from proceeding with the season’s plans.

SportsCrusader.com can confirm that, more than twelve clubs have confirmed their participation in the league and will be divided into two Zones, A and B with the respective winners battling each other in a one off match to determine who goes through to the middle League.

The Accra West District Football Association’s League Board are set to release the league Fixtures in the coming days for the clubs to have a knowledge of the opposition they will face.

MTN FA Cup: Wa Rockets Attributes Defeat to Poor Officiating

Wa Rockets trainer, Joseph Fosu has attributed his side’s MTN FA Cup semi final defeat against Bechem United to bad officiating.

According to him, the Division One League side came into with the purpose of booking a spot in the final but we’re denied by the Referees.

Speaking to the media after the game, Fosu noted that his young team were denied two clear penalties during the first half of the game which affected their second half performance.

“We came to win and you saw that in the first half. We actually dominated, even though we were playing a Premier League side – the status was the same”,  he said.

“Everyone saw it clearly that the referee was not fair in the first half: we had two penalties, he denied us and as young players as my boys are, they became demoralised. So, in the second half, they knew the referee was against them. They lost concentration in the middle, our central defender got injured, and he ignored it, so, the boys saw that even if they scored a goal, he would disallow it,” Fosu added.

Bechem United are through to the final of the 2016 MTN FA Cup where they will beating second tier side Okwawu United.

The Nkawkaw based based side defeated Liberty Professionals 3-2 on penalties in the other Semi-final after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Aduana Stars forward Yahaya Mohammed was the hero as the Dormaa based side recorded a slim 1-0 win over Medeama SC in their Ghana Premier League Match Week 22 outstanding match at the Tarkwa T and A park on Thursday.

The victory takes  the Ogya lads above Wa All Stars in second place with the Wa based side having a game in hand.

The fixture, originally slated for Wednesday July 27, was rescheduled due to Medeama’s engagement in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The Mauves and Yellow came into the game following an impressive 3-1 win over Tanzanian side Young Africans last Tuesday.

But despite largely dominating the game, it was Yahaya Mohammed who ensured that his side clinched all the three points with a 77th minute strike.

Medeama pushed on for the equalizer but their efforts proved futile.

The Tarkwa based will now look to put the disappointing defeat behind as they prepare to honour two more outstanding fixtures- against Techiman City in Tarkwa and Wa All Stars in Wa.
