Ghana To Participate In World Swimming Olympic Qualifier

The national swimming team of Ghana are scheduled to participate at the World Olympic Swimming qualifier in Romania slated for 25 of May 2016.

The team which consists of Four boys and one girl namely Abeiku Jackson, Paa Kwesi Jackson, Kweku Addo, Zanobia Addo and Ophelia Swin are in camp preparing vigorously ahead of the scheduled Olympic qualifiers.

In an interview with Sportscrusader.com, the President of the Ghana Swimming Association Theophilus Edzie said, “the athletes are in camp preparing for the tournament, the only problem we have has to do with financing, we need approximately 20,000 dollars to facilitate the trip to Romania and we are contacting the appropriate authorities to enable us raise the amount”.

“We have tried our best in acquiring three tickets for the athletes and we are edging for support irrespective of its source,” he pleaded.

 

The President also emphasized that regardless of what happens at the tournament Ghana will be sending representatives to Rio come August.

President of the Ghana Swimming Association,  Theophilus Wilson Edzie has confirmed to Sportscrusader.com that Ghana will be represented in Rio in the discipline for the second time in 64 years.

This comes as great news to the country as we are struggling to make up athletes for the mega sporting event in Rio in August.

In an interview with Sportscrusader.com the President said, “the Universality Placement system at the 2016 Rio Olympics has favored us and we will take a minimum of two athletes to the competition, because of our participation at last year’s World Aquatics Championships in Russia”.

One of Ghana’s finest swimmers Abeiku Jackson will certainly be in Rio as he could even qualifier on merit as he currently holds the national record of 24.41 seconds 50 metres freestyle.

Young Abeiku Jackson Sets New National Swimming Record

The Ghana  national swimming open championships took center stage  on Sunday at the Burma Camp swimming pool as  the national record was shattered in the 15 metres  freestyle as various swimmers where looking forward to improve their metres billing system in the sport.

 

The anticlimax of the whole event was in the 15 metres freestyle swimming race that saw one of the country best swimmers Abeiku Jackson head to head with his rival Kweku Andoh.

 

The national record which was 24.74 seconds was broken in this contest by  Abeiku Jackson by a time of  24.41 seconds, Abeiku showed some real energetic agility in the water outsmarting kweku Andoh who had a blistering start to the contest but failed in his quest  to win the race with a time of 24.84 seconds.

 

Speaking to sportscrusader.com the President of the Ghana Swimming Association Mr.Theophilus Edzie said “i am very impressed with the overall participation of the championship especially with the 15 metres freestyle race and Abeiku Jackson proved why he is one of the best in the country”.

Ghana Swimming National Open Championship Kicks Starts

The first national open swimming championships kick starts this Saturday,27  February 2016 at the Burma camp swimming pool in Accra.

 

The championship which is first of the year seeks to keep various athlete in sharp for the upcoming subsequently African and world championship and it will be a beneficial exercise for the security forces who will be looking forward to keep fit in their various jurisdiction.

 

The President of  the  Ghana Swimming Association, Mr Theophilus Edzie told sportscrusader.com that “the upcoming championship will help training various security forces and individual athlete so that they can get stamina and fitness”.

 

Mr. Edzie also added that Abeiku Jackson and Kweku Addo are gradually urging closer to the category B qualification time,so this championship will help them improve upon their personal best.

Ghanaians Must Rally Behind "Lesser Known" Sports As Olympics Urge Closer

With 167 days to the start of the Olympic games, the failure of  many Ghanaian athletes in various disciplines  in their quest to qualify for the upcoming Olympic games in Rio has prompted various stakeholders in the sporting fraternity as to why this myth of neglect of the so called Lesser known sports in the country is affecting the number of contingent Ghana will be sending to Rio both.

 

Ghana has made less impact in various Olympic games, because of the neglect of stakeholders with regards to investment in sporting activities. The President of Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) Mr.Theophilus Wilson Edzie once reiterated the fact of Olympics participation being an investment venture into various sporting disciplines.

 

I feel the frustration of the various associations whenever i go them to inquire about their latex happenings in their sport. Amazingly they all sing one song ‘funding’, who is charge of funding the associations to their various qualifier rounds.The associations are doing their best for the country is left to us as a people to complement their effort to make them run effectively.

 

For instance last week,the Ghana Taekwondo Federation  found it difficult to secure air ticket for their contingent to Morocco and also a three man team where expected to represent Ghana for the table tennis championship but only two could make just because of the association could fund the trip.

 

But the question is how do we invest in a venture where we can get medals.The answer is simply,drawing up a mission statement that plans for the future. Recently the President of GSA announced his mission statement titled Vision 2024, where he is looking forward to win more medals for the country.

 

It saddens my heart when i see a nine man contingent with over 20 officials walking down the tunnel on opening ceremony of the Olypics

 

Are we not mystified by the quantum contingent Australia, Usa, China,Russia or even Nigeria bring to the games,if we also want that huge numbers then we must work towards it,it doesn’t happen by magic.

 

It is not to late to rally round the Red,Gold,black and Green,because our allegiance to this Great nation can not be doubted,so is about time we change our attitudes towards the so called Lesser known sport.
