Radio station, two firms fined GHc122,000 for illegal connection

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has fined three institutions to the tune of GHc122,607.61 for illegally using power.

The companies have since entered into a payment plan with the ECG to pay all monies, failure to which they will be prosecuted.

The companies in question are Ankobra Fm in Axim in the Nzema East Municipality, BP Restaurant in Takoradi and Johnson and Johnson, a small scale mining company in Tarkwa.

Ankobra Fm was surcharged GHc16, 998.76, Johnson and Johnson, GHc100, 578.74 and BP Restaurant, GHc 5,030.11.

Speaking to Citi News, the Western Region Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Philip Osei Bonsu indicated, “this is part of our effort to enhance our revenue collection and protection. This is to ensure that the Electricity Company of Ghana becomes that credible off taker all Ghanaians want ECG to be.”

He however warned that “we are putting this out to our cherished customers to serve as deterrent to all those who will engage in illegal connections. Apart from surcharging you, you may be prosecuted. We have started an exercise of deploying our technicians to visit every meter in the system to ensure the integrity of our meters.”

He added, “We are committed to this course. It is for this same reason that we embarked on revenue collection exercise last August where we disconnected over 900 households in Tarkwa.”

This exercise, he reiterated, will continue.

He also announced “a 6 percent of surcharge amount will be given to informant as reward for members of the public who will volunteer information to our loss control team.”

Sierra Leone Refugees Rendered Homeless In Takoradi

Scores of Sierra Leonean refugees have been displaced in Takoradi in the Western region after their home was demolished.

 

The Sierra Leoneans acquired the property when they relocated to Ghana in the late 1990s.

 

A court ordered the destruction of the property to repay a loan reportedly secured by their mother from an acquaintance.

 

The Sierra Leoneans are, however, crying foul over the handling of their petition to the Chief Justice to overturn the court order.

 

Spokesperson for the group Daniel Tahiru Cole told Starr News an injustice is being perpetuated against them.

 

“ I can never stand and watch this injustice that is going on. They have come to pull the property down telling me that I can send this case to anywhere that I like, but I know that justice in Ghana will prevail through the chief Justice” .

Police Investigates Death Of 3 Kids In Takoradi Fire

The police in Takoradi have commenced investigations to ascertain how three children  were burnt to death at Bidifuom, a suburb of the Takoradi Market Circle in the Western Region.

 

 

According to the Takoradi District Police Commander, Superintendent Peter Ofori Donkor, says the police investigation will be hinged on information made available to it by the Ghana National Fire Service, which has to first confirm the cause of the fire.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, Supt. Ofori Donkor said “at about 2:30am, the police had reports that there was fire outbreak at the Takoradi Market Circle at a place called Bidifuom.

 

 

Police moved to the scene and it was observed that a kiosk was totally destroyed by fire. Three children were burnt to death in the process and their bodies have since been sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for autopsy.”

 

 

The tragic death of the two girls and the boy aged between one and three years, broke at the time when the Bidifoum part of the Takoradi Market Circle, was full of merry makers in the heat of the West Side Carnival celebrations.

 

 

While some residents alleged that the mother of the children had locked the kiosk in which the three children were sleeping with a candle to join the merry makers, others suspect arson by the father of one of the kids, who is alleged to have been at loggerheads with the mother.

 

 

This year’s Christmas celebrations in the Western Region has recorded another unfortunate incident following the death of Bright Larbo, a 22 year old Takoradi Polytechnic student, and Nasiru Amoah, a 24 year old welder who drowned at the Albert Bosomtwe Sam fishing Harbor on Christmas day.
