FIFA 11 for Health Kicks off in the Upper West Region

Some selected Basic schools in the Upper west region are set to benefit from the ongoing FIFA 11 for Health Project after its commencement on Monday January 11, 2016.

The five day interactive programme will see participants schooled on how to use football as a medium of relaying health related information to their pupils.

The global outreach project from FIFA is heading to the region for the first time despite its presence in the country in the last four years.

The educative project is aimed at equipping the Basic school teachers on how to feast on the affiliation of the school children to football in relaying healthy living conditions.

The project scheduled for January 11-15 will see the teachers armed with an eleven week long project with school kids on completion.

The global out reach project will see over 80 schools in the region represented in its maiden edition slated at the Wa sports stadium.

Regional Football Association (RFA)chairman Alhaji Sadugu Yahaya commended the organisers for the project and tasked the teachers to relay the message across to the pupils.

“The most important thing is for the teachers to get the message across and deliver it as recieved from the tutors. It is a global project and must be embraced with all the needed attention and mindset.

It is our first time of getting its taste but we hope it continues with larger numbers in the subsequent years. Thanks to the organisers the upper west region has been factored in”, Alhaji Yahaya revealed.

The fourth edition of the project was launched in December last year by four times African Footballer of the year Samuel Eto ahead of the January kick offs across the nation.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has fined three institutions to the tune of GHc122,607.61 for illegally using power.

The companies have since entered into a payment plan with the ECG to pay all monies, failure to which they will be prosecuted.

The companies in question are Ankobra Fm in Axim in the Nzema East Municipality, BP Restaurant in Takoradi and Johnson and Johnson, a small scale mining company in Tarkwa.

Ankobra Fm was surcharged GHc16, 998.76, Johnson and Johnson, GHc100, 578.74 and BP Restaurant, GHc 5,030.11.

Speaking to Citi News, the Western Region Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Philip Osei Bonsu indicated, “this is part of our effort to enhance our revenue collection and protection. This is to ensure that the Electricity Company of Ghana becomes that credible off taker all Ghanaians want ECG to be.”

He however warned that “we are putting this out to our cherished customers to serve as deterrent to all those who will engage in illegal connections. Apart from surcharging you, you may be prosecuted. We have started an exercise of deploying our technicians to visit every meter in the system to ensure the integrity of our meters.”

He added, “We are committed to this course. It is for this same reason that we embarked on revenue collection exercise last August where we disconnected over 900 households in Tarkwa.”

This exercise, he reiterated, will continue.

He also announced “a 6 percent of surcharge amount will be given to informant as reward for members of the public who will volunteer information to our loss control team.”

Black Stars goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has donated footballs and training logistics to his former club Friends Babies FC, in the Central Region.

The Ashgold shot stopper presented 10 footballs and a pair of training bibs to the lower league side after passing thruogh the ranks of the club.

The vocal goalie came to the rescue of the side as a consolation for nurturing his talent as a goal keeper in the foetal stages of his career.

The Miners shot stopper presented 10 footballs, two sets of training bibs, 2 pair of gloves and 2 goal keepers jerseys to motivate the Colts club ahead of their domestic season.

An unknown amount was donated by the Black Stars goalie to defray the administrative cost of his former side.

Dauda returned from a dreadful spell in South Africa to steer Ashgold to their first league title in almost 20 years.

The Miners safest pair of hands is renowned for his philanthropic gestures outside the field as he draws closer to his community.

It will be recalked the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Zinedine Zidane parted ways in similar fashion to prevent their former clubs from going into administration.

Police Blamed for Man’s Death In Volta Region

Police in the Volta Region have been accused of causing the death of a man at Dzadzefe in the Akatsi North District of the region.

Family of the deceased has blamed the police for the injustice meted out on their relative when he was alive.

The deceased was accused of breaking into the house of a parliamentary aspirant of the governing National Democratic Congress Stephen Torpko.

Stephen Torkpo reportedly ordered his ‘boys’ to beat up the deceased before he was taken to the police station.

According to the family, their relative was then tied with a rope in the police cell, where he was pronounced dead the following morning.

“Someone wanted to untie him and give him food but the police refused,” one relative, Kofi told Joy News correspondent Ivy Setordzi.

The family is seeking justice because they do not understand why their relative who left the house alive did not return in the same state.

“We want our brother back alive, and we want justice,” Kofi said.

However, in an interview with Joy News, Regional Crime Office, Superintendent Seidu Adamu said the police is still investigating to ascertain the circumstances under which the incident occurred.

Police Blamed for Man’s Death In Volta Region

Dogbatse cleared to lead Volta RFA

Mr. Francis Dogbatse is set to take office as the Chairman of the Volta Region Football Association, following the decision of Mr Kennedy Gbloekpor of Robert FC of Sokpe, to discontinued the suit he filed at the High Court, Accra against the GFA and the Volta Region RFA Chairman elect.

The Plaintiff, Mr Kennedy Gbloekpor on December 14, 2015 filed at the Registry of the High Court a Notice of Discontinuance to end the case.

Mr Gbloekpor, informed the court that “please take notice that the Plaintiff has on this day discontinue this action wholly.

Thus, with the case Kennedy Gbloekpor vrs GFA and Francis Dogbatse now discontinued.

THis development has now paved way for the Volta Region FA Chairman to take office and assumed duties on the Executive Commitee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The GFA President, Kwasi Nyantakyi, is expected to swear him for a four year term.

The GFA was barred from swearing Dogbatse into office after the regional elections until the case is heard and determined.
