GWF Begins Preparation for Tokyo 2020

Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) President, Ben Nunoo-Mensah, says they have already begun preparations for the next Olympic Games in the year 2020 in Japan.

 

Ghana had a representative in the ongoing Olympic Games but failed to make it to the second round of his competition.

 

Nunoo-Mensah in an interview with Sportscrusader.com said he was not disappointed in his athlete’s performance because he was a young weightlifter competing with seniors.

 

“Christian Amoah is 17 years and has lots of weightlifting years ahead of him and is a prospect for the future,” he said.

 

The President added that GWF currently have lots of young athletes and with the right support from government and corporate bodies, they can make it in Tokyo.

 

He added that the Federation would be competing in the African Junior and Youth Championship in Algiers as well as the IWF Junior and Youth and the Commonwealth Junior Youth and Senior Competitions in Malaysia in September and October respectively.

 

He said, “This is where we need to start from; our strength in Africa and in the commonwealth currently is at the junior and youth levels and we must do all that we can to make sure that our athletes go and start taking on the world from those levels where they have competitive advantages, build their self-confidence and start the journey to Tokyo 2020”.

Rio 2016 : Ghana"s Weightlifter Bows Out With an Unfortunate Decision By Jury

Ghana’s sole representative in weightlifting,Christian Amoah has failed in his quest to reach the next round of the men 85Kg category as his 157kg Clean & Jerk was declared as a No lift by a 5 member Jury.

 

Amoah’s 157kg Clean & Jerk was unanimously adjudged a GOOD LIFT  by the 3 referees but

unfortunately, 5 minutes later, the 5 Member Jury overruled the decision,therefore making his previous attempt of 130kg Snatch and 153kg Clean & Jerk to stand which was not enough to grant him qualification.

If that lift should have  stood it would have been his seasonal and  personal best  after his previous best stood at 155kg

 

According to the revised rules, the Jury’s decision cannot be challenged.

Elsewhere Ghana’s Alex Amankwah could not progress to the latter stages of the men’s 800m event after he finished 7th in the heats.

Massive Boost for Ghanaian Weightlifter Ahead of Rio Olympics

Ghana’s sole representative in weightlifting at this year’s summer Olympic Games has received a massive boost for his pre-games preparation from Kofikrom Pharmacy.

The support from Kofikrom Pharmacy will take care of his dietary supplements and camping allowance before joining Team Ghana in Rio.

According to the CEO of Kofikrom Pharmacy, Mr Kofi Addo Agyekum his company is aimed at supporting the least financed sports.

“We want to help the least financed sports to grow that is why we have come on board to support weightlifting, he noted.”

On his part Christian Amoah thanked the company for their kind gesture and assured them and Ghanaians as a whole that he will do his best to raise Ghana’s flag at the Games.

Christian Amoah will be competing in the 85kg category at the Games in Rio.

Amoah Selected To Represent Ghana in Weightlifting At the Rio Olympics

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has selected Master Christian Amoah as Ghana’s representative for this year’s Olympic Games to be staged in Rio, Brazil next month.

 

The 17year old weightlifter started his journey in the sport in 2013. He participated in the Nanjing Youth Olympic qualifier in Tunisia in 2014 and placed 5th in the 77kg category and also took part in the Africa Youth Games in Botswana in 2014 where he placed 3rd in the 77kg category.

 

Amoah is currently credited with three silver medals and is ranked 28th in the world in the 85kg category

 

In an interview with Sportscrusader.com, Amoah said : “i am delighted with me being selected,it another chance for me to make my country proud, i wouldn’t promise a medal, but i will surely make them proud”.

 

The youngster also reiterated the need to stay focus ahead of the games which is less than a month to go.

 

Amoah represented Ghana in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and also the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Championship in USA in 2015.

Overview of the 2016 Phoenix Life Weightlifting Media Seminar

The 1st Phoenix Life Weightlifting Media Seminar ended very successful at Accra Sports Stadium as numerous sports journalist where educated on how to impact on the development of sports in Ghana.

In attendance was the President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, Youth and Sports Minister Honorable Nii Lantey Vanderpuye ,Dr.Kwaku Ofosu Asare,The General Secretary of GWF Mr. Husseni Akueteh Addy,and GWF communications Director Mr Charles Osei Asibe who graced the occasion.

The Sports Minister in his speech praised the initiative of the GWF for their efforts in the educating the new generation of sports journalist who lacked the in-depth knowledge of accurately disseminating information to the public in their reportage.

He said “Sports is a discipline,and because is a discipline it has it own characteristics, so you need to understand the ‘head’, stomach, and the ‘tail; of the sports,because you cannot transport the language of football into athletics and the same way you cant do same with other sports”.

“So if you want to be a professional you need to be abreast with the characteristics of that discipline,” he ended.

Dr. Asare in his lecture reiterated the role sports journalist play in impacting on the overall development of the sports in Ghana.He highlighted on the various component that assesses the impact and various recommendations that will help thrive the development of sports

Mr Nunoo Mensah in his lecture also highlighted on the need for sports branding and used how the success of weightlifting and cricket in Ghana as a case study. He went on to discuss the various techniques tha accounted for success of this two brands.

 

The Seminar ended with Mr. Husseni demonstrating various technicalities that accompanies weightlifting as a sports which was very helpful to numerous sports journalist who lacked the technical know in their reportage of the sports.

Ghanaian Weightlifter Wins Three Medals

Ghana’s female weightlifter, Ruth Baffoe, has won three bronze medals in the ongoing Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Yaounde, Cameroun.

 

Ruth won her first bronze medal with a lift of 53 kg, added the second with a snatch of 69 kg and followed it up with a clean jerk of 82 kg at the championship, which also serves as the African qualifier for the Rio Olympic Games.

 

The female weightlifter was the only female athlete going to the competition hopeful was among a 10-member delegation, comprising seven weightlifting athletes and three officials who left the country last Friday for the competition which ends on Friday, 14 May 2016.

 

The other participant which include Christian Amoah, Forrester Osei, Prince Nyarko, Theophilus Tackie, Nii Dario Dodoo, David Akwei will be looking forward to improve their points build system to increase their chances of going to the mega sporting event in Rio which less than 100 days away

Ghanaian Athlete Arrives For African Olympic Qualifiers

The technical Director of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Prof. Kyle Pierce and UK based Ghanaian weightlifter Forrester Osei arrived in Ghana last Tuesday for the Africa Weightlifting Championship in Yaoundé, Cameron.

 

The National Weightlifting Team, Black Cranes will leave the shores of Ghana to participate in the Africa Seniors Weightlifting Championship in Yaoundé on Friday, May 6, 2016.

 

The competition also serves as the qualifiers for 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Forrester Osei who is the current national record holder of Snatch 140 KG, Jerk 170 KG and Total 315 KG said he was excited to be back home to join his colleagues.

 

He called on Ghanaians to support the team in their pursuit for a spot at the Olympics which is the biggest stage any athlete wants to be.

Overview of The 2016 Ghana Indomie Junior and Youth Competition

The 2016 Ghana Indomie Junior and Youth Competition ended successfully with Migrants taking the major trophy .

Lifters from Migrants , A1 , Pure joy and Titans were the competitors with support from their various schools.

In attendance was the President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, Youth and Sports Minister Honorable Nii Lantey Vanderpuje ,Deputy Secretary General of National Sports Authority Mr Saka Quaye,and GWF communications director Mr Charlse Osei Asibe.

There were competitions for the Male and Female U-14 , U-17, U-10

Adi Kukovi from Titans was winner  for the girls U-14

Christian Amoah U-17 boys from Titans was also crown the winner

Girls U-10 was Anetu Aryee from Migrants

The President of GWF after the program congratulated the participated lifters and promised to support them for both local and international competitions for them to become beneficial to the nation .

 

The Honorable Minister on behalf of the ministry and the government also made a promise to assist the federation and their sponsors to achieve their goals .

"I Promise Ghanaians At least Two Slots In Rio" - Weightlifting President

President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Ben Nunoo Mensah is very confident ahead of the upcoming Olympic qualifiers next month in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Ghana will be represented by seven athletes as and three officials who will be looking forward to securing a ticket to the upcoming Olympic games in Rio in September.

In an interview with sportscrusader.com, Mr Mensah said “we are taking very good and capable athletes to Cameroon, and i want to promise Ghanaians that at least two of our athletes will definitely qualify for the games”.

Mr Mensah further named  the two likely to make it to Rio as Christopher Osei who is a professional athlete based in the United Kingdom as well as young talent Christian Amoah who is the 49th ranked athlete in the world and is really showing glimpses of a future champion.

“The athlete are already in camp preparing for the qualifiers and we hope that all the necessary logistical support would be provided us to ensure a smooth participation at the qualifiers,” he added.

"The Media Has A Role To Play In the Development of Weightlifting "- President

With the maiden edition of the Indomie Junior Inter Clubs Weightlifting competition scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 2016 approaching, the President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) has expressed how critical the role of the media will be with regards to the development of the sport.

Weightlifting has being on upward trend recently with the sport winning numerous medals for Ghana in international events.

The President Ben Nunoo Mensah has told sportscrusader.com that “we (GWF) really appreciate the role the media has played so far in the development of the sport, but we entreat them to further publicize the sport to encourage more sponsorship”.

Mr Mensah also emphasized that the GWF is having slight issues with funding, but hailed Indomie Ghana for their support so far especially as they have agreed to partner the GWF for youth and other developmental projects with GHC20,000.00 cash and GHC10,000.00 worth of products.

The President concluded by saying “the future of weightlifting in the country is bright, we have put down measures to facilitate the success of the sport in the near future.

Weightlifting Association In Limbo Over African Olympic Qualifiers

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) are in  dilemma about Ghana’s participation in the African Weightlifting Olympic qualifiers that is scheduled to take place on 6 May 2016 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Ghana is struggling to gain qualification to the upcoming Rio Olympics that is a few months away, with only two athletes having already qualified for the competition.

President of GWF, Ben Nunoo Mensah told sportscrusader.com that “as at now we have submitted a budget for seven athletes and three officials to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and we are hoping adequate arrangement would be made to prevent any damaging occurrences”.

Mr Mensah also emphasized that six athletes are in camp with the exception Christopher Osei who is based in the United Kingdom.

“All the athletes are preparing vigorously for the  upcoming qualifiers, the Ghana Olympic Committee has promised to give out tickets to the contingent, so for us, everything is set and we are ready to make Ghana proud,” Mr Mensah said.
