University of Ghana Are The New UPAC Champions

University of Ghana ended the reign of Accra Polytechnic in the University,Polytechnic and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship after defeating the defending Champions 45-44 in the finals of this year’s edition of the competition.

Accra Polytechnic fought fiercely but the reining Champions University of Ghana showed why they where touted as favorites having thumped Accra Polytechnic by 46-38 when the two sides met at the Group stages.

University of Ghana kept their composure in the game as the ended the second quarter still with a comfortable lead.

Accra Polytechnic’s Shooting guard Gabriel Numar shot his side into the lead with a wonderful three pointer and two free throws to take the score to 44-42 with some few seconds remaining on the clock.

The moment of glory came for the University of Ghana when shooting guard Emmanuel Wolf scored a three pointer to end the game 45-44 in favor of the home team.

University of Ghana head coach Meme Falconer was named the coach of the tournament with Muhaimin Guba emerging as the most Valuable player of the competition with his outstanding display for his side winning a brand new mobile phone from MTN

University of Ghana received GHC 3,000 plus souvenirs from sponsors whilst second place Accra Polytechnic also taking away GHC 1,500 plus souvenirs from sponsors Rexona, Cal Bank, MTN and Fanyogo.

Last year’s finalist Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) also defeated Takoradi Polytechnic to pick the third place.

The University,Polytechnic and Colleges (UPAC) Championships has hit his anticlimax with various teams looking forward to clinch the ultimate trophy.

 

Defending Champions Accra Polytechnic demolished debutantes Valley View University 81-22 in the opening game in Group A of the UPAC quarter finals.

KNUST showed their dominant over UENR by defeating them 63-34.

In other matches University of Ghana secured the bragging rights GIMPA after winning the contest 53-29 while Takoradi Polytechnic stunned Marshalls University College   59-57

Results Of Ongoing UPAC Finals Championship

UPAC 2016 Quarter Final Draw Released

Quarter finalists of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship have been drawn into two groups of four teams.

The groupings were made in the aftermath of preliminary qualifying games which ended on Friday April 8 at the University of Ghana (UG) where University of Ghana and Marshalls qualified.

In the quarter final Group A, two-time winner Accra Polytechnic will take on debutantes University of Development Studies-Tamale and the reigning Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Basketball Champions, University of Ghana (UG).

In Group B, last year’s finalists Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology will face off University of Energy and Natural Resources for the first time since their last meeting in the GUSA Games.

Games will be played in a round robin format to decide which teams progress to the semifinals of the competition.

The top two teams in each group qualify for the semis.

University of Ghana And Marshalls Secure Spot In UPAC Finals

University of Ghana secured revenge over Marshalls University College to progress to the quarter finals of the 2016 UPAC Championship.

 

UG defeated their counterparts 31-29 to secure an automatic slot to the finals which will be played from April 14-16.

UG side had recorded wins over Central University College and Wisconsin University after beating them 67-35 and 53-32 respectively.

Marshalls on the other hand had showed class over the same sides by defeating them (Central University College and Wisconsin University) to set a clash with the host University of Ghana.

The game which was a repeat of last year’s qualifiers saw hundreds of fans troop to the center court to catch a glimpse of the match anticipated game.

UG having led in most part of the quarters received a scare after Marshalls crawled back to drew level at the end of the 3rd quarter.

But the host had to live it late to secure a narrow win after Marshalls had missed four crucial free throws in the dying embers of the game to confirm their place at the finals.

Marshalls grabbed the only available slot as the second best placed team to join the likes of University of Natural Resources and Energy (UNRE), University of Development Studies-Tamale(UDS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)  Takoradi Polytechnic, Accra Polytechnic, GIMPA and the  University of Ghana.

Takoradi Polytechnic Topples UCC Into UPAC Championship Finals

Takoradi Polytechnic toppled University of Cape-Coast (UCC) out of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship with a slim 49-46 victory to seal top spot in Zone E.

The ‘Twin City Mafias’ therefore earned the only spot into quarter finals of the Championship which will be played on March, 14 – 16 2016 at the University of Ghana Basketball court.

With the University of Development Studies, University of Energy and Natural Resources and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology having already secured a passage to the next round of the tournament, this year final promises to be keenly contested championship.

As hosts, UCC started the game strongly by exhibiting the same level of energy and dazzling skills that had pushed the team to beat city rivals Cape-Coast Polytechnic 46-35 in the derby.

Buoyed on by the charged crowd who thronged the revamped basketball court to create the perfect ambiance befitting a spectacular match up between two behemoths, UCC controlled the tempo of the game, eventually controlled the lead.

With experienced Forward Mohammed Yakubu in the fold, coach Lawrence Ampiah’s side held the game’s lead till the mid point of the third quarter where Takoradi Poly made a great push to overturn the deficit and exchange leads with UCC.

The competition now heading into qualifiers for Zone E.

Basketball is Off the Road Declares Queen

1978 Sports Writers Association of Ghana Female Basketball Player of the Year Salifatu Musa has ripped authorities for the stunted growth of basketball in Ghana as a result of many years of neglect.

The award winner made the statement in an exclusive with Basketballghana.com at the recently held Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship Zone B games. The Championship, which is headlined by Rexona, is the third edition of Ghana’s biggest tertiary basketball tournament.

Nicknamed “Basket Queen”, on the back of many years leading the female national basketball team in several contests, the former international was in the stands to witness institutions from the Upper West and Northern Regions compete for a spot in the latter stages of the competition before getting some shots up in a free throw contest during recess.

She said, “Basketball in Ghana now is off the road and I don’t blame the players, I blame the central government because this time round, all the attention is on only football. Sometimes when there are even competitions, they tell you there are no funds but when it is football even if they are going to beg or steal money to organize it they will do it.”

The former Guard, who trained Tournament Most Valuable Player Abdou Fatau, also highlighted the almost defunct state of female basketball in the country where the ladies game struggles to feature in the few competitions organized.

On the day, University of Development Studies (UDS-Tamale) sailed through a tough.group involving Wa Polytechnic and Tamale Polytechnic to book a spot in the quarter final of the UPAC Championship set to take place on April 14 at the University of Ghana.

UDS Advances To The Finals Of UPAC Championships

The University of Development Studies (UDS) has qualified to the quarter finals of the UPAC Championship after emerging victors in Zone B of the qualifiers.

The Zone B, which comprised schools like UDS, Tamale Polytechnic, NJA College of Education and Wa Polytechnic who were all hoping to gain the ticket for the finals but unfortunately NJA College of Education withdrew from the contest leaving only three contestants.

The Final round saw UDS beating their counterparts from the Tamale Polytechnic 24-20 to secure the only available slot in the Zone.The Wa Polytechnic lost the first round match against UDS with a resounding loss 21-31

UDS failed to make it to the last edition of the competition after pulling out in the preliminary rounds.After enthralling and keenly contested games among the three school, UDS came out as winners of the Northern zone and also become the first team to qualify for the finals which will be held between April 14-16 at the University of Ghana Basketball court.

"Let"s Encourage More Women Participation In Basketball" - Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuje

Basketball in Ghana is tremendously getting huge popularity among the youth of this country and it growth is vast spreading across the length and breath  of the country.

 

The Minister of Youth and Sports,Hon Nii Lante Vanderpuje said “in this days of affirmative action, lets see whether we

we can encourage the ladies in various institution to participate in basketball more often”, he entreated the CEO of Rite Sports and to this assertion at the launch of the University,polytechnic, and colleges (UPAC) games.

 

The Honorable Minister also emphasize his believe of women having a significant role to play in the development of sports and especially  basketball and that the Ghana Basketball Association should lay down measures to execute the agenda of women participation in the sport.

 

The basketball championship program line kicks starts today with warm up matches at the Accra polytechnic campus.

The handicapped nature of various sporting disciplines with regards to the  seeking sponsorship has prompted various stakeholder to seek measures to address this situation.

 

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Nii Lante Vanderpuye said ” sports cannot thrive without corporate sponsorship and that is why i will use this opportunity to say , our doors will be open to everybody who has something to offer Ghana sports”, he said this at the launch of the university, polytechnic and colleges (UPAC) games yesterday in Accra.

 

The Minister who received the approval of parliament on Wednesday  assured Ghanaian that equally attention will be giving to other sporting disciplines just like football football has received.

 

Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuye will be looking forward to hit the ground running as quick as possible because of the choked curricular of sporting activities in the calendar year.
