Straightforward speaking Ghanaian football administrator, Nana Fitz has diagnosed the state of Ghana football now and his verdict reveals football in the country is in a critical condition.
Football in Ghana looks to be about centuries behind in terms of kits worn by teams, playing surfaces, stadiums (club owned), branding of the teams, marketing and the mother of all issues with Ghana football, sponsorship for the various domestic leagues.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) currently is battling securing a headline sponsor for the league which commences on Feb 20 after 2014/15 season sponsor, First Capital Plus Bank now Capital bank has temporarily halted their Ghc10m Ghana cedis deal. Though the FA has refused the idea of the Bank, the president of the association, Kwesi Nyantakyi has said the FA will look for a new sponsor to help cushion the clubs financially.
The Ethics committee of the GFA ruled on te bribery allegation involving Techiman City and Wa Africa united during match week 22 of the 2014/15 GN Bank division one league season. The ruling demoted the two clubs to division two after been found guilty of givng and receiving ‘money’ to play a fixed game. Charles Kwadwo Kumi alias Micky Charles who is the president of Techiman City has refused to accept the verdict and threatened to pursue the case further.
This has cast more doubt in the minds of people who believe the Ghana premier league will suffer another delay to an already 5-months long wait for the commencement of the 2015/16 league season.
Nana Fitz noted for his candid views on issues has added his voice to the many who are scared and worried for what Ghana football is going through.
In an interview with sportscrusader.com, the ex-boss of Cornerstone FC said, “Everyone knows currently football is not doing well, the whole fraternity is not doing well and the league will start soon without a sponsorship and the teams involved in leagal tussles.”
“The GFA appears to be employing only people who will succumb and keep their opinion to themselves, than those who will be vocal and this is evident in what is happening to football now.”
