Rugby in Ghana is tremendously getting widespread as more of the youth especially in high school and tertiary institution are getting involved in the sport.
The technicalities involved in the game make it a very difficult for the up and coming youth who have learn and practice more in order to be conversant with the game
The President of the Ghana Rugby football Union (GRFU) Mr. Herbert Mensah said in the interview with sportscrusader.com that
“right now rugby receives more publicity than any individual club football,as a sport we are second to football in terms of publicity in the country”
The GRFU is currently an Associate Member of World Rugby (WR) and falls under the development region of African Rugby as a Full Member which shows how Ghana has been accepted as an emerging force on the continent.
Mr.Herbert also emphasized on the challenges of growing the sport in Ghana, especially trying to eliminate the culture of ‘streetness’ and ‘footballness’ out of rugby because rugby as sport is very technical and there aren’t to many huge men and women in the country that can compete now at the international level. Participating in competition is a step in the right direction in terms of growth of the sports,he added.
The future of rugby is showing glimpses of brightness,as we could one day witness the national rugby team participating in the future rugby world Cups he added.
No matter how we think of rugby as a ‘crazy’ sport it gradually spreading vastly across the length of the country with more of the youth involvement in the sport.
