Elmina Sharks Secures premiership qualification

Elmina Sharks have been promoted to the top-flight of Ghana football after emerging winners of Zone Two in the GN Bank Division One League.

With a game to end the season, Sharks have secured 66 points, 10 more than second placed Karela FC.

Sharks were presented with medals, a plaque and a trophy at the brief coronation event held after their penultimate game of the season against Nzema Kotoko which ended 1-1.

The players and technical team members of the club took honours for their troubles in making it to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) for topping their zone.

Coach Kobina Amissah’s Elmina Sharks will hope to make a strong impression in the GPL next season after being so dominant in their zone this season.

They could join Ebusua Dwarfs as the second club from the Central region should the Abontoa Abontoa Boys retain their status for the 2016/17 GPL.

It could be exciting times along the coast of western Ghana as encounters between Dwarfs and Sharks have been very fiercely contested in the past and it could be renewed in Ghana’s top-flight football competition for the first time.

FA Cup History Doesn"t Favour The Big Teams- Liberty Skipper

Ahead of his side’s MTN FA Cup quarter final clash with Division One League club Elmina Sharks, Liberty Professionals captain, Samuel Sarfo says the history of the competition doesn’t favour the big teams.

The FA since it’s reinstatement in 2011, has produced several surprises and with three second tier clubs in the last eight of this season’s edition, there is still a tendency that a surprise winner will emerge.

Having played all their previous Fixtures away from the Carle Reindorf, Liberty will host Elmina Sharks in the quarter final on Saturday and sheaf of the game, Skipper Samuel Sarfo has warned his side against complacency.

“Liberty is bigger than Elmina Sharks and we are ahead of them in terms of performance”, Sarfo told SportsCrusader.com in an exclusive interview.

“But the history of the FA Cup has not been favoring the big teams especially those who approach it with complacent attitude and underestimation.

” So for us, we have task ourselves to lift the FA Cup trophy. we hope to exhibit the best of our performance and comply to every instructions that were given to us to reach this far.

” And I think input will determine the results”, Sarfo added.

In a related development, Samuel Sarfo has expressed delight the Liberty’s top scorer in the FA Cup, Bernard Arthur has been declared fit for the quarter final tie.

“I am happy our main man, Bernard is doing great in training. He has been splendid throughout thus campaign and he will be important for us on Saturday”, the captain concluded.

MTN FA Cup: Liberty Skipper Wary Of Sharks Threat

Liberty Professionals Skipper, Samuel Sarfo has revealed that his side are aware of the threat posed by Elmina Sharks as the two teams prepare to face each other in the MTN FA Cup quarter final at the Carle Reindorf Park on Saturday.

The Elmina based side remain the only unbeaten team in Ghana football having gone the whole of the first round without a single defeat in the GN Bank Division One League.

But with the FA Cup trophy being Liberty’s only realistic chances of a silverware thus season, captain Samuel Sarfo says they are approaching the game like a league fixture.

“We are aware they are yet to lose a game but I don’t think they have played a team of our quality this season. So they should come prepared because the house is full now and ready to tear them apart”, Sarfo told SportsCrusader.com in an interview.

“I haven’t watch them but I know they are a good side so we are approaching the game like a league match”, he added.

Elmina Sharks reached the quarter final of the 2015/2016 MTN FA Cup after beating Premier League side Ebusua Dwarfs in the Previous round while Liberty saw off Division One side Samartex.

The Quarter Finals draw of the 2016 MTN FA Cup has thrown up some juicy and entertaining pairings.

The draw which was held at the Alisa Hotel saw tournament favourites and second record FA cup champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko host fellow premier league side, Bechem United at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Ghana Premier League Leaders, Wa All Stars will play at the Wa Park to township rival, Wa Rockets whilst Okwahu United led by former Ghana Black Stars midfielder, Mohammed Gago will play against GLP side, West Africa Football Academy (WAFA).

The draw was completed with the scientific lads, Liberty Professionals play host to GN Bank Division One league side, Elmina Sharks.

The games will be held on June 18/19.

Chairman of the MTN FA Cup committee, Kurt E.S. Okraku, who chaired the draw mentioned home teams will receive Three Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc3000) whilst the away teams will be given Four Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc4000) to cushion their preparations towards the game as well as Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (Ghc500) worth of MTN airtime.

“I think we are ready for any opposition. We are in good shape at the moment and Premier League qualification is our target and a collective ambition of the entire playing body at the club,” he said.

“My goals will flow at the right time but of course I cannot hide my excitement after scoring my first Hart-trick of the season,” he added.

The men are gradually being separated from the boys as the qualification to the Ghana Premier League continued over the Weekend in Zone Three of the GN Bank Division One League.

At the Tema Sports Stadium on Saturday, it was Tema Youth who got the better of Amidaus Professionals in the Tema derby. The game ended 2-1.

Nania FC also defeated Mighty Jets by the same score line at the Legon Park.

On Sunday, King Solomon failed to capitalize on their home advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sporting Mirren.

Pure Joy recorded a resounding 3-1 victory over Istanbul at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram while newly promoted Vision FC saw off a resilient Kotoku Royals side 3-2 at the Kweiman Park.

Roberto FC recorded a first home defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to Okwawu United at the Sogakope WAFA Arena. The defeat is the newly promoted side’s second of the season, the first of which was a 2-0 loss away at Amidaus Professionals last Wednesday.

Heart of Lions continued with their quest for an immediate return to the Ghanaian top flight with a 4-2 win over Great Olympics at the Kpando Park while Joint Leaders, Okyemabn Planners also recorded a slim 1-0 victory at home to Danbort FC.

Week Eight of the 2015/2016 GN Bank Division One League failed to produced any major shocking score lines in Zone Two where Sharks still top the pack.

The Elmina based side showed why they are the leaders in that zone, thumping Tarkwa United 5-0 at the Nduom Sports Complex on Sunday. Sharks are now the only unbeaten team in Ghana in all competitions.

Venomous Vipers after suffering a 5-0 humiliation at Corners in mid-week, returned to their favourite Robert Mensah Sports Stadium where they recorded a 1-0 victory over Dunkwa United.

Samartex, after shocking Premier League giants Hearts of OAK in the MTN FA Cup and following it with a home victory over Proud United in mid-week travelled to Obuasi where they held Ahiken to a 1-1 draw.

Wassaman drew goal-less with Karela FC with Nzema Kotoko and Eleven Wise recording victories at home to Starke away at Proud United respectively.

Elsewhere at the Ejisu Park in Kumasi, King Faisal recorded a slim 1-0 win over Regional rivals Corners.

Gold Stars will play the second of their 10 match home ban at the Ejisu Park against Deportivo.

After eliminating Premier League clubs from the MTN FA Cup over the weekend, Samatex, Deportivo and Elmina Sharks will all return to league action in midweek as the race for promotion to Ghana’s top tier continues in Zone Two.

Struggling Starke FC will host qualification hopefuls Wassaman United at the Dunkwa Park on Wednesday with Karela FC playing second placed Gold Stars.

With Elmina Sharks not playing until Thursday, Gold Stars will be hoping to go top of the table at least for 24 hours.

Asokwa Deportivo will hope to be the first team to beat Elmina Sharks when the two sides meet at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday.

Both Sharks and Deportivo are through to the MTN FA Cup Round of 16 after eliminating Dwarfs and Ashgold respectively.

Elsewhere in Zone Two, ELEVEN Wise plays Nzema Kotoko at the Gyandu Park in Sekondi where as Corners play as host to Venomous  Vipers in Kumasi.

MTN FA Cup: Dwarfs Talking Tough Ahead Of Sharks’ Clash

Ghana Premier League new comers, Ebusua Dwarfs will seek to continue their dominance over Division One League side Elmina Sharks, when the two sides renew their regional rivalry in the MTN FA Cup this weekend.

Sharks will host Dwarfs in the Round of 32 of the MTN FA Cup at the Dr. Nduom Sports Complex in Elmina, on Sunday afternoon.

Ebusua Dwarfs recorded a home win and an away draw against the Elmina based side in last season’s GN Bank Division One league, beating Sharks to the only qualification slot to the Ghana Premier League at the end of the season.

And Speaking ahead of the two side’s first meeting this season, Public Relation Officer of Ebusua Dwarfs, Mr. Paul Adjetey expressed confidence that his side will eliminate their regional rivals from the MTN FA Cup.

GN Bank Division One League Zone Two leaders, Elmina Sharks continued with their unbeaten start to the 2015/2016 campaign with an impressive 2-0 home win against Karela FC to maintain their hopes of Premier League qualification.

Goals from former RTU forward, Akuwuah and defender Suraj Mohammed ensured that the Elmina based side’s imperious home form continued.

Gold Stars, after receiving a 10-home match ban for crowd troubles were in action at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, but even that did not stop them from beating Starke FC 2-0 to keep the pressure on Sharks.

The sixth week fixtures of the 2015/2016 GN Bank Division One League come off this week end with some blockbuster clashes across all three zones.

Zone Two leaders Elmina Sharks will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2015/2016 season as they play host to Karela FC.

The Elmina based side has won four and drawn one of their opening five fixtures of the season and Karela FC will look to cause a major upset at the Nduom Sports complex on Sunday.

Coach Kobina Amisah’s Sharks will move to 16 points with a victory this weekend and with the Giants in the zone coming up against each other, this will provide an opportunity for the Elmina based side to stretch their lead.

Second placed Gold Stars will start their 10-match home ban with a fixture against Starke FC with former Premier League campaigners Eleven Wise playing as host to Samatex at the Sekondi Gyandu Park.

Newly Promoted side Nzema Kotoko will hope to pick up their first three points of the season but they have to do that against a strong Wasaman side who look to bounce back from their recent disappointment.

The GFA on Tuesday handed a 10-match home ban and a GhC15,000 fine to the Bibiani-based side for the conduct of their fans in their match week three encounter against Elmina Sharks.

It will be recalled that, Gold Stars supporters physically assaulted some players and officials of Sharks as well as the match officials leaving some of them hospitalized.

But in an exclusive interview with SportsCrusader.com on Tuesday, Sharks trainer Kobina Amissah disclosed that he can’t be happy with the sanctions although it did not come as a surprise to him.

“Honestly I don’t need to celebrate on this ruling and I don’t want to be happy about it because it is bitter for teams to swallow this kind of ruling”, he said.

“But what we also have to consider is that, this is not the first time a club has suffered this kind of ruling. Just last season, Pure Joy also tasted this kind of fate when they were ban from playing 8 matches at home.

“So the ruling is not surprising to me”, Amissah added.

The former Bechem United and Gold Stars trainer also called on fans of the various clubs to desist from hooliganism citing that it is the clubs they claim to love that suffer the most in the long run.

The Elmina based sides, after losing the sole Ghana Premier League ticket of the Zone to regional rivals Ebusua Dwarfs last season, has started this campaign on a bright note winning all but one of their opening five games of the season.

Sharks have accumulated an impressive 13 points, 5 better off than they had at this stage last season despite teams that are relatively stronger compared to the first five teams they engaged in the previous campaign.

The team has recorded victories against Zone Two giants King Faisal, Wassaman and Starke FC as well as newly promoted Nzema Kotoko, with their only draw coming up at Bibiani against Gold Stars in a game that was marred by crowd troubles.

And speaking in an exclusive interview with SportsCrusader.com on Tuesday, trainer Kobina attributed the team’s current run of form to the recruitment, they made during the off season.

According to him, the club realized their loophole from last season and made purchases to correct them during the break.

“We made so much strategic signings this year”, Ammisah said.

“For instance, when you come to Zone two, the best goalkeeper there from last season was Joshua Opoku from Starke FC and we were able to get him into our side.

“We didn’t play any justify. We just went direct to poach the best players from our zone. We went to King Faisal to take their Central Defender [Tetteh Nortey]. We went to Tarkwa United to get a defensive midfielder and we went to as far as Zone one to poach RTU’s leading marksman Joseph Mensah and right back Suraj Ibrahim.

“Those additions have really helped us and I can say that our current squad are capable of playing even in the Premier League”, he added.

Elmina Sharks Attacker Returns To Training After Horror Attack

Elmina Sharks forward Benjamin Tweneboah who was rushed to the hospital during their clash with Bibiani Gold Stars is now in a stable condition after that near fatal beating.

The 20 year old Sharks attacker incurred the wrath of the home fans when he pulled his side level in the GN Bank Division One league clash and was rushed to the hospital for further medication.

Elmina sharks eventually forced a 1-1 drawn game with their guests to maintain their unbeaten start to the season in the second tier league.

Tweneboah,  who was the target of the disgruntled fans at the dreaded Bibiani grounds, has since returned to training after his release from the hospital.

The stylish centre forward unleashed his artistry footwork all day long before finally registering his second of the season at the dreaded Bibiani Park on Sunday.

“Thanks to God Almighty I am back to light training now.

“My conditions have improved seriously and I have since started doing what I like best- playing football”, Benjamin told sports crusader.

The skilful attacker then explained how scary it was after he was surrounded by the fans at the Bibiani park on Sunday.

“One man came to me and said, you scored the goal against us and another one came very soon.

“I was scared but we should know that this is football and clubs should know how to control their fans and supporters.

“Football is a source of enjoyment and must not be seen as a war by clubs at all. I thank God we are back playing our cherished game”, the attacker explained.

Elmina Sharks are on course for promotion to the top flight league after a near miss last season in zone II of the second tier league.

GN Bank DOL: Elmina Sharks Files Protest Against Gold Stars

GN Bank Division One side, Elmina Sharks FC, have called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to annul the result of their week three league match against Gold Stars last Sunday at the Bibiani park.

The match ended 1-1 but the Elmina based side are demanding the three points and three goals after some of their players and technical team were assaulted by fans of Gold Stars.

In a protest filed by the club to the Division One League Board and signed by General Manager of the club, Mr. George Wiredu, Elmina Sharks condemned the violent behaviour of the fans and officials of Gold Stars, describing it as unsporting and a dent on the image of modern football.

“We wish to state that the results should have been 0–1 in favour of Elmina Sharks FC and that for fear of our lives, coupled with the police admission that they could not guarantee our safety, the officials were compelled to extend the added time and award a penalty unduly to Gold Stars to equalise”, the statement read.

“By the 44th minute, our player, Benjamin Tweneboah, in Jersey No. 11, scored the first goal of the game and as he celebrated his goal, he was hit with a stone and a slab and he immediately collapsed.

“Tweneboah, together with the PRO of the club, Richard Arthur, who was also hit with an object, were rushed to the Bibiani Goldfields Hospital but even in that state, they were pursued by the Gold Stars fans to the hospital,” the statement recounted.

The statement further said one of the assistant referees, Aaron Churcher, was also hit with stones, and further warned that if he discontinued officiating, he would be subjected to a worse punishment.

Elmina Shark’s centre forward Tweneboah Benjamin is confident his side can secure top flight football for next season after a great start to the season in the GN Bank Division One League.

The Cape Coast based side jointly sits atop of zone II and their in form striker has rallied his team mates to build on the good start and pick the sole ticket in the zone.

The 20 year old striker tipped his side to storm the division after an impressive transfer business and a new lease of life around the playing staff.

Benjamin, who has already his season’s account after just two games into the season admitted to the difficulties and challenges in the second tier league but remained confident his side will sail through at the end of the season.

“This is our year and nobody’s in the zone.

“We have made a great start to the season and hopefully we keep the momentum going forward as a unit.

“Our motivation is not bad all as a group of players and I believe that will be our guiding factor of we are to seal premier league football at the end of the season.

“Hopefully I want to play a crucial role for Elmina Sharks in our qualification process”, Tweneboah Benjamin told sports crusader.

The Cape coast side missed out of Premiership football last season due to a late collapse but have so far won two of its opening matches in the 2016 edition of the second tier league.

Bankroller of the side and Presidential aspirant, Papa Kwesi Ndoum, dashed the club’s head with a car early last week to facilitate his movement.

President of Ambitious Division One League side Emina Sharks Football Club, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has presented a brand new GMC Terrain 4-Wheel Drive to the coach of the club, Kwabena Amissah.

The new car will serve as a huge motivation for the coach in his quest to qualify the Elmina based club to the Ghana Premier League.
