Ghana premier league champions, Ashgold lost the season’s curtain raiser – super clash against FA cup winners, Medeama SC at the Accra sports stadium by a lone goal to nil.
The Miners were tipped by the bookmakers as favourites to win the clash but coach Tom Strand and his men proved a handle full for the league champions as they dominated with ball possession and took full advantage of the goal scoring opportunity that came their way.
Ashgold will need to pick themselves up immediately as their next clash against Algerian club, Mo Bejaia is in 6-days and know only a victory can restore the confidence in the team that seems to be shrinking with no victory in a competitive game since the league ended.
The Miners are not new to African competitions as their past exploit in the late 90s will testify but the absence of the Ghana premier league leaves the side shell-shocked of form and the defeat against Medeama has dented the least hope football fans in Ghana had in the only club in the champions league.
In an interview with Boss fm, the club’s communication director, Kofi Ywason said, “the super clash meeting against Medeama SC was a good preparatory ground to taste test the strength and capabilities of the players going into the CAF champions league clash against, Mo Bejaia.”
“The Tarkwa based club dominated the first half and we took over in the second half though the referee disallowed a clean goal we scored. With the total performance of the team it was a satisfactory as both the technical handlers led by coach Bshiru Hayford and the management team approved was a good team showing,” he added.
Ashgold will host Algerian side, Mo Bejaia in the first leg of their champions league clash at the Len Clay on Feb 14.
