Ex-Sports Minister Signals Danger As Stadium Continues to Rust

A former Minister of Youth and Sports for the Republic of Ghana, Hon. Clement Kofi Humado has backed calls by Member of Parliament for the Tano North Constituency, Madam Freda Prempeh, for the Accra Sports Stadium to be closed down and undergo renovation works to avoid a possible disaster.

All four of Ghana’s national stadia are yet to undergo maintenance works since they were constructed to host the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The inability of successive governments to do maintenance works on the stadia have left the sporting facilities with rusted metallic structures and cracked walls.

And speaking to Starr Sports in Accra, Mr. Humado, a former sports Minister in Ghana noted that, calls by stakeholders to shut the structures and repair the edifice of Accra Sports Stadium for instance are in the right direction.

“The other day I was passing by the Accra sports stadium and I stopped and I was looking at the structures. This thing started during my time with the scoreboard. The sea breeze had eroded various elements in the scoreboard,” Humado recalled.

“I also know there is rust going on some of the steel tensile of the stadium and I can only guess that it has increased.

“Even if the metallic structures painted like the seamen do, we would have been able to keep the structures for a longer time. But, if we are not doing that alone, then I am afraid, we could have a problem.”

Despite the fast corroding metallic structures, fans Accra Hearts of Oak supporters trooped in their numbers to watch their game against Edubiase which they won by a Samuel Yeboah lone goal last Sunday.
