IAAF Suspend Kenyan Athletics Chief

Athletics World Governing body, IAAF have provisionally suspended Athletics Kenya chief executive officer Isaac Mwangi from all offices or positions in either AK or the IAAF in the interests of the integrity of the sport.

IAAF Ethics Board chairman, Michael Beloff, said Mwangi is provisionally suspended from any office or position in either AK or the IAAF, which he presently holds and is precluded from assuming any new office or position in either organisation for a period of 180 days starting February 22, 2016, pending investigation of a complaint made against him and information that the IAAF Ethics Board has seen.

Beloff said the Ethics Board has imposed the order for provisional suspension having carefully considered the information referred to them, which discloses a prima facie case, i.e. a case warranting investigation, against Mwangi in relation to potential subversion of the anti-doping control process in Kenya.

The Ethics Board stressed that the imposition of an Order for provisional suspension in this case will in no way prejudge the outcome of the investigation which will now be carried out by the board’s appointed investigator, Mr Sharad Rao.

Mwangi remains presumed innocent until the outcome of the investigation and the determination of any disciplinary charges which may follow from that investigation.

Mwangi has been accused of demanding Sh2.4m bribes from sprinters Fransisca Koki (400m hurdles) and Joy Sakari (400m) to apparently lessen the impact of the ban after failed dope tests at last year’s Beijing World Championship.

Meanwhile, Transparency International have released their global report on sport corruption at a time when Kenya is under the international spotlight. The report comes at a time when four Athletics Kenya officials are facing allegations of corruption. AK president Isaiah Kiplagat, IAAF council member and AK vice president David Okeyo and former treasurer Joseph Kinyua are under investigation by the International
