Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah says local players are forced to leave the Premier League over the need to better their lives and that of their families.
The domestic league has been widely criticized for its lack of quality players.
Officials often point to the alarming rate of player exodus from the local scene to join countries that are not even noted for their football prowess.
Local clubs are unable to keep hold of their best talents due to their inability to pay competitive wages.
Clubs are more too willing to even sell nowadays to get additional funds to run operations with the massively declined revenue from the gates due to lowered patronage.
Many have suggested the formulation of a policy that will restrict the easy movement of players abroad but this will be in breach of a fundamental constitutional provision of freedom of movement.
And Jonathan Mensah who left AshantiGold in search of greener pastures back in 2008 feels players are right to seek for similar moves in their bid to better their lot.
“The Ghana Premier League is no longer gainful as it used to be. Financially, it is very tough for players in the league,” Mensah told Starr FM.
“They also want to be leaders in their families and be responsible. And to be responsible is really tough.
“I know what I’m talking about because I’ve been through it. I don’t see anything wrong with local players moving abroad to get better income. I think it is quite reasonable.
“They cannot be held responsible for the poor nature of the Ghanaian league.
“If they get good pay they would stay. If they want to leave it means they are not well paid.
“Consequently, it would affect the quality of the league because good players would keep going.”
