United Were The Best Team Until Injury Plague - LVG

Louis van Gaal has claimed his Manchester United side were the Premier League’s best team this season until injuries destroyed their title chances.

Van Gaal was defiant after guiding the Reds into next month’s FA Cup final with a last-gasp win over Everton at Wembley, insisting they are still in the hunt for a top four finish but also admitting they could not handle a demanding fixture list with so many players missing.

United went top of the table – albeit for just a couple of hours before Leicester replaced them – after winning at Watford on November 21, and Van Gaal claims a crippling injury list made it impossible for them to sustain a title challenge.

It was clear that he wanted to make a point with doubts over his future at Old Trafford beyond the end of this campaign.

The Dutchman also praised his team’s spirit and claimed they have done well to be where they are with so many players out.

Van Gaal said: “When everybody was fit, we were first in the league at that time. Then when we had 14 injuries, or the double injuries on the full-back positions, I could not solve that problem.

“But still we are here, still we are fighting for the fourth place, also we are in the final of the FA Cup.”
