There was chaos at the Achimota Retail Center on Boxing Day following the decision by the Mall to close all its washrooms at 10pm while shops were still doing brisk business.
According to some disgruntled patrons, this has been the practice of the mall since it was opened in October.
With a total of over 45 shops and two anchor tenants – Shoprite and Palace, the Achimota mall was opened on Thursday October 29 as part of a growing number of malls in the country.
Despite an investment of over 60 million dollars which has been put into the facility, it appears it cannot keep its washrooms open for the several thousands who patronize it.
On Saturday December 26, thousands had thronged the facility to mark Boxing Day. All eateries were in full swing, music was blaring from every part of the mall, many families, friends and business associates had gathered but all was not well.
There was chaos brewing in certain parts of the mall.
Over 200 people had lined up to use the washrooms but janitorial staff said their shift had ended as such they had closed the washroom.
Persons who were hard pressed, had to plead and beg to be allowed to use the washroom but the security and janitorial staff insisted that they won’t open the doors.
Confusion then ensued between the mall security and patrons, many of whom didn’t understand the wisdom of the decision.
According to the security personnel on duty, management had instructed them to shut down all the washrooms at 10pm each night regardless of what happens within the mall.
Staff standing behind the meshed gate stood unconcerned despite the pleas and threats.
One female staff insisted that it was her time to close as such she had closed the washrooms.
Right outside the mall is the St Johns footbridge. This place has become the urinal for the several thousands who are turned away from the mall.
Drivers at the St Johns station at Achimota have for months been complaining about the stench that emanates from the base of the footbridge.
They claim that many patrons use that place as their urinal each night.
The question begging for answers is why such a huge facility will shut its washrooms at 10pm especially when all the shops are still open.
