Mikel currently has 64 caps for Nigeria and has been a regular in the side ever since his debut back in 2006. The Chelsea midfielder has been a steadying figure in the national team squad for a decade now and has received recognition for his consistency and loyalty to the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian Football Federation have announced that Mikel has been awarded the Sam Okwaraji Award by the Nigeria Pitch Awards due to currently holding the most caps in the current senior squad.

It was felt that he deserved to be recognised for his consistency over the years and the loyalty he’s shown to carry on playing for the national side, as the Chief Operating Officer, Nelson Olafisoye, reveals.

“We found out that Mikel Obi has the highest number of caps in the camp of the Super Eagles presently. That itself is a great sign of commitment that should be applauded,” he said.

Previous winners of awards from the same ceremony are Vincent Enyeama who, in 2014, won the King of the Pitch award which is essentially their Player of the Year. Also, Kenneth Omeruo – a teammate of Mikel’s at Chelsea – won the Defender of the Year award in 2015.
