Charles Boateng’s late first half rebound finish and Samuel Tetteh’s early second half strike were enough to place West Africa Football Academy on the summit of the Ghana Premier League temporarily on Saturday after a 2-0 win over title hopefuls Asante Kotoko at the Sogakope Stadium.
Kotoko had been brilliant from the off season, winning three trophies but failed to replicate their pre-season form when it mattered most against the Academy boys.
WAFA, who defeated the home-based national team of Togo last week during their preparations, dominated Asante Kotoko from the onset, forcing Felix Annan into brilliant saves.
With Kotoko only acting as enzymes, WAFA deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute courtesy of Charles Boateng shortly after introduction Ofori Antwi from the bench to replace injured Felix Annan.
But it was Samuel Tetteh, fresh from an impressive trial with Malmo FF, who had the final say, slotting in from Gideon Waja’s brilliant diagonal pass with Amos Frimpong failing to match the pace of the former national U-20 winger.
Kotoko responded to early second half set back creating numerous chances to get a consolation, but Obed Owusu and Stephen Nyarko failed to beat the Ablora who walled WAFA’s goal mouth.
But the pendulum again swung in favour of WAFA, who could easily have made 3, but Samuel Tetteh was hacked off the ball.
With time running out for Kotoko and going in favour of WAFA, Obed Owusu kept piling pressure on Ablora who chose delay time.
But the effort wasn’t enough for the Porcupine Warriors to score their first league goal at the Sogakope Park against the Academy Boys and they succumbed to league opener defeat.
