Rigobert Song Named Cameroon Coach

Cameroon legend Rigobert Song has been roped in to replace Martin Ndtoungou Mpile as the new head coach of the Cameroon’s locally based Indomitable Lions team, according to SuperSport.

Mpile led the side during the recent 2016 CAF African Championships tournament (Chan) in Rwanda.

The ex-skipper was unveiled as the new coach on Thursday during a press conference which also saw the new coach of the senior team, Hugo Broos announced.

It is announced that Song will maintain the same back room staff with Ernest Agbor taking the assistant coaching role whilst Simon Nlend remains the goalkeeper coach and Narcisse Tinkeu retaining his role in the team.

The Indomitable Lions made it to the quarterfinals of Chan losing to Cote d’Ivoire, conceding all three goals in extra time.

The 39-year old, who was in charge of Chad until recently, is now expected to bring a lot of his playing experience into his new role at the helm of this side as they prepare for Chan 2018 in Kenya.

Song remains the most experienced player in the history of Cameroonian football with 137 appearances including his appearances in four FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010.

The ex-West ham, Trabzonspor and Liverpool defender also featured at eight Africa Cup of Nations where he still holds the record of 35 consecutive first team games.

Next to his name, Song won two Afcon titles with the Indomitable Lions in 2000 after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties and in 2002 they defeated Senegal 3-2 on penalties.
