The CAF Champions League is an annual international club football competition run by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The top club sides from Africa’s football leagues are invited to participate in this competition, which is the premier club football competition in the continent and the equivalent to the UEFA Champions League. Due to sponsorship reasons, the official name is Orange CAF Champions League
The biggest showpiece on the African continent will kick start this weekend as 55 clubs have been presented with the opportunity to take on the world’s best at December’s FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.
The journey begins with the preliminary rounds that sees several big names in African club football competing, including previous winners like Vita Club, Enyimba, Wydad Casablanca, ASEC Mimosas, Union Douala,Club African and Ashanti Gold.
One of the heavy weight clashes will see the vipers of Uganda are among one of the big east African bloc who will be looking forward to make an impact but they have a tricky tie against the Enyimba of Nigeria who have the competition two times.
The stand-out fixture sees Ghanaian club Ashanti Gold, who lost the 1997 final, take on Algerian club MO Bejaia. Last year all three Algerian clubs involved in the competition made it through to the group phase, but Bejaia will have to dig deep if they want to beat the Premier League winners.
The reigning champions are TP Mazembe, who secured their fifth win in the competition after beating USM Algiers, the defending champions will be looking forward to defend their title after a very poor showing in FIFA Club world cup where they were humiliated by Sanfrecce Horishima.
The return legs will be played over the weekend of February 26–28, with the first round proper consisting of 32 teams being played over two weekends in March. April’s second round will see 16 teams whittled to eight, which will set up the two groups of four.
