The Success Story Behind Weightlifting in Ghana is Johnson Aboagye

The prominence which weightlifting has gained now in Ghana is undoubtedly a true reflection of success especially after its culmination of 19 medals at the African  Weightlifting Championship which is the highest haul of medal the country has ever won at one single international competition from a single discipline,accompanied with it high level of organization since it was first introduced in 1997.


 


Nonetheless its success hinges from the man who started it all in 1997 is Mr Johnson Aboagye,who through his hard work started the development and the popularization in the sport of  weightlifting.


 


In an interview with Mr.Aboakye at the annual weightlifting congress at the Accra sports he described the euphoria around that time when it was first its inception. He said”in those days when you seek for sponsorship from companies,they will me what sport is weightlifting.They would subsequently tell you to go and they will get back to you later”.


 


He also emphasized about how difficult it was in getting executives to aid him execute his mandate as the President until when Mr.Saka Acquaye and Mr kyei came on board,which really help with the growth of the sports.He said “there is no doubt as to the progress of the sport under the current management,if we had that support during that time,i think we will have done well”.
