DR Congo Pulls Out Of U-17, U-20 African Cup Qualifiers

The Democratic Republic of Congo has pulled out of the upcoming 2017 U-17 and U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers set to get underway next month.


The Small Leopards were set to host Chad in the first leg of the U-17 continental qualifier on the weekend of June 24-26 before playing away a week later in the return leg.


The winner of this tie was set to meet 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup finalists Mali in the second round in August. Chad has henceforth received a bye to the second round and will meet Mali.


Twenty countries are now involved in the first round with the 10 winners and Chad facing the 17 countries that got a bye to the second round including Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Tunisia, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia.


The 14 winners face off in the third round with the seven eventual winners joining hosts Madagascar.


Meanwhile, Burundi has also received a bye to the second round where they meet record seven-time African champions Nigeria in the U-20 Afcon qualifiers with the first leg in Bujumbura on the weekend of May 20-22 before the return leg in Nigeria set for June 10-12.


Twenty two countries are now involved in the first round with the winners set to face off against the 16 countries that got a bye for the second round including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Lesotho, Libya, Mali, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa.


The 14 winners from the second round will face off in the third round on July 8-10 for the first leg and July 22-24 for the return leg with the seven eventual winners joining hosts Zambia for the tournament next year from February 26-March 12.
