Ghana could bid for future World Cups including junior and senior world tournaments if President John Dramani Mahama should fulfill his promise of building five new stadia, in addition to the existing ones, if re- elected.
The flagbearer of the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC), who is seeking a second term in office, is poised on improving sports infrastructure in Ghana so as to unearth talents across various sports disciplines.
President Mahama noted that the facilities will be constructed in the Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahofo, Volta and the Eastern regions to add to the current five national stadia in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and Cape Coast.
“We will refurbish the Azumah Nelson Sports complex, formerly Kaneshie Sports Complex.
“In addition, we will build five new stadia at the Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Volta and the Eastern Regions,” the President stated.
But his critics will mock his move as political talk, as existing stadia – with the exception of Cape Coast, which is relatively new – are in poor state and on the verge of collapse if not rehabilitated.
Ghana, in 2008, hosted a very successful Africa Cup of Nations but failed in their quest to host the 2017 tournament, losing out to Gabon.
